Helgeng
The southern side of Lorel, the "cup" end of the planet. While from Space, this is a completely meaningless concept - Planets have no Up, as they have no Sides - it is an important distinction when on The Surface. After the planet's two halves were severed following the Scream, they acted as independent areas where previously there had been unity between the two. As such, it developed into it's own area with it's own politics and belief systems.
Upon reunification, what was originally simply considered the planet of Lorel (named many years prior) saw fit to be split into two areas; Helgeng in the South and Celeng in the north. The two remained close allies, but decided that the distinction was vital as to rectify the differences between the two. In fact, this entire agreement was difficult in the first place. Northern Lorel is distinctly easier to navigate, having had large volumes of infrastructure created by The High Church many years ago, connecting cities to towns across the region in such a way that facilitated travel. The south had no such treatment, and as such, it's fractured states were significantly more difficult to come to agreement on.
There are many names for the South, as a result of this. Those who were considered too small a region to be reasonably included in the reunification proceedings have their own names, though many will simply fall back on "Lorel" or "The South" for simplicity.
Structure
The "country" of Helgeng is mostly used as a simple way to describe the planet's split nature. As the North and South halves of the planet were severed following The Scream, it acts as a simple way to describe the somewhat aligned cities and towns that remained in operation in the south of the planet. As a political area, is non-existent - it is not possible to speak to any given president of the area, nor an overall ruler, however individually there are many self-governing areas that make up the area.
When looking to make decisions for the entire region, representatives from the few major cities in the region are gathered through simple Commlink calls, and will meet in the city of Annsdale; a mostly central location relative to the majority of major areas.
History
Originally a half of the full Planet-Nation of Lorel, the Scream's severance caused a divide between the two - quite literally. With no more ability to cross The Divide, they were left alone. As such, the South and North became rather distinct in their existence and as such a method to describe the two areas was necessitated.
Demography and Population
The population of the area is hard to properly gauge, as there is very little in the way of Legislative body to create a proper Census. It is believed that somewhere between 2 and 5 million people live in this entire hemisphere.
Territories
The "territory" of this region is considered to be everything South of The Devil's Divide.
Religion
The Children of the Drill, as is standard for Lorel, are extremely prevalent here. Those further south, towards the Marshlands and Tundras, tend to lean towards a more extreme form - seeing those who pilot ships as literal Gods, rather than the more lax beliefs of those further South, as they have little contact with the outside world due to further isolation.
