Dreamspace

The knife of the coral-engine spun up until it became a keening whine, forever increasing. Higher and higher it went until I thought my head might explode, then it released itself without warning. My ears rang as the reddish-orange energy lanced out infront of the ship and then cut upwards. Where the lance of energy touched; glowed, even though there was nothing to heat or iradiate within the voide of space. . When it reached the apex of it's slice, the energy from the ship died and the cut glowing beam it had left in front began to pull itself open, revealing a swirling landscape of multicolored static.   Once it pulled wide enough for the passage of the whole of the ship, the ships engines pushed us forward.   As we passed the boundaries of that tear in the very fabric of being, shutters started to close off the viewports. I swear I could see shapes moving in that swirling static, like something moving in thickly viscous fluid. Obiously present, but obscued by opacity. The man next to me reached for his pistol, I'm not sure if it was because he thought it would do something or just for the sake of saying he tried. As the shutter finally inched it's last distance, I swear I saw a face form, stretching against the dimensional fabric of Dreamspace like it was pressing against the skin of a drum. It's eyes seemed to look right at me, intelligently, like it could actually see me standing there, looking at it.   Finally, the shutter closed. We all breathed a sigh of relief. The ship creaked underneath

Dreamspace is the term given to the extra-dimensional space that our ships must travel through to get from point A to point B in any reasonable amount of time, considering the time stretch of faster-than-light travel.   A Ripdrive is used to make the opening to Dreamspace, through the catalysing of Coral. Once the transition to the extra-dimension is completed, an Oracle-class Effigy is used to navigate the ever-churning sea of chaos. Some say that the Oracles literally smooth Dreamspace as they pass, resulting in a more comfortable ride.   Within this place, the laws of physics no longer apply, and one can travel from one end of the galaxy to the other if they are well protected against the energies within Dreamspace.   It's not uncommon for 'ghosts' to be reported within the swirling empyrean of Dreamspace, and as such it has become common practice for shielding to close across any viewport upon a vessel that travels through Dreamspace in an attempt to limit the psychoactive reactivity of the dimension.

Geography

There isn't a place to stand, per se, within the Dreamspaces. It's all a torrential and contentious psychoactive sea of energy that is constantly ebbing, flowing, breaking apart, and coming back together. The whole space stands in opposition to the laws of physics, and really anything condusive to human habitation. There are landmasses, however, within the pace, but they come in and out of existence with unknowable regularity. The few attempts to establish a foothold within the space quickly told us all not to try that.

Localized Phenomena

It's hypothesized, with a not insignificant amount of backing data, that repeatedly poking holes in the fabric of space-time is not good for said fabric in the long run. A few pokes are fine here and there, and it will eventually knit itself back together. This would be equivalent to the amount of traffic that is present around frontier worlds and the less busy space lanes.   Around a capital planet, however? That amount of traffic in and out of Dreamspace is more pressingly concerning.   A few of the Star Kingdoms have taken steps to try an minimize the damage, like restricting where in a system ships can jump from or

History

It goes without saying that the discovery of Dreamspace was a watershed moment in human history. So integral is it to how our modern society functions and stays coherent with each other.

It seems that the Dreamspace is closely related to the Coral somehow, but it's unknown exactly how. One theory is that the Coral either deposits or extracts energy from the Dreamspace, to some effect, whatever it is.
The larger a ship is, the more Oracles it needs to comfortably pass through the Dreaming Dimension. Dreadnoughts have whole covens of Oracles to transport themselves through their tears in reality.
