The Guarda of Lanternlight are the official law enforcement body of Lanternlight, responsible for enforcing statutes assigned by the City Council and keeping the general peace.
In practice, the guarda are pitifully understaffed compared to the private enforcers commissioned by the various business interests within the city. The gaurda operate more as a go-between or common coordinator between operations carried out by guild-staff and private employees. The guarda also provide private services to Lanternlight business, supplying experienced investigators or legal assistance.
Ranks
Watchman - The lowest rank of gaurdae, assigned as manpower to watch over streets, patrol districts, or strategic points throughout the city. Watchmen are poorly paid and paid even less respect by higher-ranked guardae and private enforcers. It is well known that most watchmen can be bought for information or to look the other way when it is important that they do so.
Sergeant - Sergeants are the first rank at which you are considered a real gaurdae. Sergeants perform functionally similar duties to watchmen, but are given preferable postings and duties. Guardae who have committed to becoming sergeants are much less likely to be bribed, and may even have serious intent to make a career of this whole guard thing.
Watch Sergeant - Watch Sergeants are Sergeants who have proven their leadership capacity and have some serious experience in the guarda. Watch Sergeants are given command of 3 to 10 watchmen and sergeants (called a "Watch") and are expected to administer them as they carry out a posting. Watch Sergeants are known for being highly concerned with the integrity of their watch detail.
Inspector - Inspectors are either the lowest rank of bureaucrats in the guarda, or are the first rank where guardae are trusted with investigations. Inspectors ensure that businesses are complying with city regulations and perform investigations into major crimes within the city.
Chief Inspector - Chief inspectors have a record of excellent service as inspectors, and so are given command of an inspectors' office. Chief inspectors report to their lieutenants on the status of investigations and make directing decisions, which are executed by the inspectors under them.
Lieutenant - Lieutenants are responsible for the smooth operation of some portion of the guarda's operations. Some lieutenants oversee territory within the district - like a city block or a segment of infrastructure. Others are responsible for operations, like collecting taxes from businesses within a district or auditing business ledgers.
Captain - Captains execute on the plans of their watch captain within a district.
Watch Captain - Watch captains are responsible for all guarda operations within a district.
