The Timeless Boneyard

Divine Planar Realm of Molt, God of Death

Located atop the massive spire of purgatory, the Timeless Boneyard is a a necropolis of graveyards, mausoleums, and solemn courts dedicated to the god of death. This gloomy realm, also known as Purgatory, is home to countless souls awaiting final judgment. Clad in the sheaths of their astral forms, these somber sojourners bask in deep reverie, reliving scenes from their mortal lives during a solitary, inward journey of remembrance and catharsis. Within the Boneyard, those awaiting judgement at the hands of The Bonelord or his judges languish in a bleak environment where time has no meaning and life and death are of no consequence.   Within the center necropolis that lies at the center of the boneyard, The Bonelord himself conducts his grisly work and holds his somber court reserved for the most debated or noteworthy of souls awaiting judgement. Here also, atop The Bonelord's central necropolis, is the tower in which he makes his home...spiraling above the boneyard and purgatory, the tower stretches into the sky and is said to be the closest point on all the planes to the mysterious dimension of time, which The Bonelord is said to be one of, if not the only being capable of traversing the notoriously dangerous space at will.   The Boneyard(And likewise is Purgatory, which lies below The Boneyard) is the land of the dead, and the most populous inhabitants of this plane are the souls of the recently deceased as they stand in line, patiently awaiting their judgments. Most of those who are judged fit to remain within Purgatory and The Boneyard become dead petitioners. In their roles as groundskeepers and caretakers for the plane, they are rarely significant or active participants in the plane’s politics. Purgatory and The Boneyard, placed as they are in the metaphysical and philosophical center of the Outer Planes, sees far more traffic from other planes than any other Outer Planes, with visitors from the Abyss, Heaven, and everywhere in between traveling to Purgatory and The Boneyard on missions as diverse as the visitors themselves.

Geography

Sitting atop Purgatory, there is little in the way of true Geography within The Boneyard. Instead, mausoleums, courts, graveyards, and all manner of structures that serve to inter the dead and places for The Bonelord to hold his court decorate this realm. At the center of The Boneyard lies a titanic tower constructed from Iron as black as a nightmare with stark white bones decorating the exterior...in this tower where The Bonelord himself resides and is said to be the closest point in all the Planescape to the ephemeral Dimension of Time, Molt watches over his realm as souls enter and are judged before being sent to the Outer Planes, to the Plane which most suits them or to the Plane of the God they worshipped in life.

Fauna & Flora

Being the Plane where all life flows after it inevitably dies, The Boneyard is a land where all that grows or exists is dead in some way. Trees of white bone, dead grass that flows gently in an invisible breeze, dead plantlife that creeps up the side of the still buildings and the souls sent here for judgement...all things here are stagnant and lifeless, muted in shades of grey and black.   Aeons can be encountered in Purgatory and The Boneyard, but they are not natives of this realm. They often use them as a staging point for their own missions through the planes, and in many cases have understandings found throughout Purgatory and The Boneyard to facilitate such travels.   The Boneyard and Purgatory are the home planes of crypt dragons. These creatures emerge from nests of tombstones and skulls within the Graveyard of Souls and often seek out lairs on the Material Plane. There, crypt dragons claim the dead as both their hoard and their subjects: a creature’s earthly remains are treated as precious treasure, and a creature’s soul is considered to be under the dragon’s protection. Crypt dragons even go so far as to escort favored souls through the Astral Plane and represent them. Anyone who perpetuate crimes against a corpse or a soul that a crypt dragon has declared sovereignty over must face the dragon’s wrath.   The most common outsiders within The Boneyard are psychopomps, stoic stewards and guides for departed souls. Psychopomps do not cause mortal death (that role among the outsiders of Purgatory and The Boneyard being filled by shinigamis) but seek instead to ensure that a deceased soul’s judgment and journey to its ultimate afterlife proceed smoothly. This is far from a simple task, as psychopomps often have to battle marauding predators that feed upon hapless souls, locate confused or rebellious spirits who attempt to flee their fate, or deal with those who would subvert the natural order with soul-binding magics or necromancy. They also serve as respected neutral parties, as they work with denizens of many planes equally and disperse judged petitioners out into the Great Beyond.

Natural Resources

Being the realm of souls and the dead, The Boneyard has little in the way of any sort of resources...however, it is quite rich in Souls, which many creatures amongst the planes consider to be a quite valuable resource.
