The Ascension of High Humanity & The Surface Cleansing

A monumental event which saw High Humanity ascend into the skies in floating cities while the world below them burned.

Though details are sparse, what has been uncovered in archaeological digs and expeditions into old High Human ruins has found evidence that High Humanity, when they ascended into the skies in their cities, purposefully cleansed the surface of most life through unknown means, and even seem to have gone so far as to wipe nearly all records of the previous age from memory and from physical record...notably, the magical school of necromancy seems to have been entirely erased as well, and did not recover and become a common school of magic until many eons later when mages would rediscover its secrets. What is known is that the High Humans saw their ascension as a salvation, as numerous murals, writings, and texts have been found depicting their rise as something they viewed with such absolute certainty that it was needed that they considered the world forfeit had they not risen to the skies in their cities.   Otherwise, precious little is known about the events leading up to or even directly after their ascension.
