Charyan (Ethnicity)
Charyans are an ethnic group most commonly found in Charya, Anmañia, and Naleed.
Naming Traditions
Family names are traditionally inherited from the mother. Nearly all Charyan family names end in an "n-suffix" (-nil, -nar, -nim, etc.). These were once markers of clan membership, but no longer carry any meaning except to indicate a surname. Given names are frequently bestowed in honor of relatives or ancestors. It is considered unlucky to bear the exact name of a living relative, so it is common to shorten or append a name to differentiate a child from their namesake. For example, a child named after Ridesa might be called Des.
