Temporalism

Our lives are small compared to the vastness of time, but the choices of one may impact all the generations that follow.
A Contemplative Heart, by Alhakim Althamin
Temporalism is a philosophical tradition which originated in Naleed. It revolves around pursuit and application of wisdom, and one's place in time.   The roots of Temporalism extend back before written records. Early Temporalist thought developed out of Naleedic cultural traditions of respect for wise elders. Alhakim Althamin ("the precious sage"), born Ruya Soor-Sheer, is traditionally regarded as the founder of modern Temporalism.

Doctrine

The Elements of Wisdom

Your choices are seeds that will bear fruit beyond your lifetime. Contemplate the consequences of your choices before you act, lest your descendants should face a rotten harvest.
The Elements of Wisdom, by Alhakim Althamin
Temporalism revolves around the the pursuit and application of wisdom in one's life. Emphasis is placed on the three elements of wisdom: choice, consequence, and contemplation.

Khiar

Khiar, or "choice", is believed by Temporalists to be the starting point for wisdom. A person may make any number of choices from among any number of options. To choose wisely, one must contemplate the consequences that will follow. Khiarat are associated with the present.

Natija

Natija, or "consequence", is the middle point of wisdom. Every choice has consequences, both large and small. Natayij are associated with the future.

Tamal

Tamal, or "contemplation", is the end point of wisdom. By studying the choices and consequences made by others, one can make informed choices in the present. Tamal is associated with the past.

Place in Time

Time is ever moving. The future becomes the present becomes the past. But for the consequences of our choices, we are rooted in the present.
Our Place in Time, by Alhakim Althamin
Temporalism observes three distinct periods of time: the past, the present, and the future.

Almadi

Almadi, or the past, refers to all events that have occurred before the present. The line between past and present is not fixed. Events in the very recent past may be considered part of the present if their associated consequences have not yet played out. Almadi is viewed as a time of study - the choices and consequences of the many lives that came before the present serve as examples for choices made in the present.

Alhadir

Alhadir, or the present, refers to ongoing events and time. Typically this also includes the very recent past and the very near future. Alhadir is viewed as a time of choices and consequences.

Almustaqbal

Almustaqbal, or the future, refers to events and time beyond the present. Almustaqbal is viewed as a time of consequences. While the immediate consequences of one's choices are considered part of the present, later consequences are viewed as part of the future.

Key Texts

The Wisdom of Alhakim Althamin

The Wisdom of Alhakim Althamin is the most influential and widely studied Temporalist text. First published in 130 GE, the book collects the writings of Alhakim Althamin.
  • The Wisdom of our Ancestors
  • The Elements of Wisdom
  • Our Place in Time
  • A Contemplative Heart

The Life of Ruya Soor-Sheer

The Life of Ruya Soor-Sheer is a biography of Alhakim Althamin, written in 137 GE by her son, Munir Soor-Sheer. It is studied by Temporalists as a guidebook for how to live wise and virtuous lives. The volume is commonly gifted to Temporalists just beginning their studies.

On the Teaching of Young Minds

On the Teaching of Young Minds is a manual for Temporalist scholars working in the Houses of Knowledge. It was written in 250GE by Makram Mamari-Set to create a set of guidelines for Temporalist education. The text outlines the methods and practices used by Alhakim Althamin and her students for study. It also contains materials for Naleedic language instruction.

Education

Buyut Almaerifa

The Temporalist pursuit of wisdom led to the development of schools known as Buyut Almaerifa or "Houses of Knowledge". Modeled after the circle of students that surrounded Alhikmat Althamin later in life, a House of Knowledge is built to serve the community that surrounds it. While instruction is primarily centered around Temporalist doctrine and the Naleedic language, there are also lessons in maths and history. Outside of Naleed, it is common for Houses of Knowledge to offer literacy instruction in the local vernacular.

Buyut Alhikmat

Buyut Alhikmat, or "Houses of Wisdom", are Temporalist universities which serve those who wish to continue their studies. A House of Wisdom is responsible for training and providing teachers for the local Houses of Knowledge. Scholars are expected to have completed the standard course of study at a House of Knowledge, and must pass an entrance exam to gain admission. There is no age restriction on applicants, consistent with the Temporalist belief that anyone may apply themselves to the study of wisdom. It is common for Houses of Wisdom to offer specialized courses of study in medicine, law, and philosophy.
