Vila

Few creatures are as beautiful the nymphs. Indeed, such creatures are, in some ways personifications of beauty, itself. Strangely, vila (sometimes known as sylphs) are not found in Polisia like most nymphs, but the mountains of Pranish. They are nymphs of elemental air-- the endless blue of the clear sky, the majestic thundercloud, and the wind blowing through the trees.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Much like their fellow nymphs, vila resemble unearthly beautiful women. They are different in that they tend to be slightly smaller. In addition, they have dragonfly-like wings on their backs. They do not actually need these wings to take off, instead using natural levitation magic. Instead, these wings only provide thrust.   These are elemental creatures, and have a certain command over the wind and storms. They can call on intense, gale-force winds and conjure rain and snow, both gentle and wrathful. In addition to the power to conjure storms from the most serene weather, they can also calm even the most furious storm.

Genetics and Reproduction

As with other nymphs, and huldra, vila are all-female. It is believed they are manifestations of elemental air, literally born from the air, itself. Most believe they are born primarily from stormclouds, explaining their volatile nature.   As with other nymphs, they do sometimes take humanoid lovers. Sometimes, when they take male lovers, a half-nymph child is born. These half-vila have some measure of their mother's elemental power. They tend to be smaller and slimmer than most, and sometimes have small wings that are too small to make use of.

Ecology and Habitats

While most nymphs have some sort of connection to a specific location, this is not really true of vila. Their domain is the sky, itself and the sky knows no borders or boundaries. Thus, they are one of the only varieties of nymph that is able to travel as they please.   A vast majority of vila make their homes on the highest peaks they can find, bringing them closer to the sky they cherish. They usually create homes in nests much like large birds, but they usually cannot be found here very often.

Behaviour

Most vila are wanderers, traveling wherever the wind takes them. They travel mostly on search of beautiful sights and grand vistas. Most of their wanderings are confined to the Pranishan mountain range, but they do occasionally travel further afield.   Vila are also known for their wild mood swings, even worse than their oceanic kin, the nereids. It can be very hard to determine just what they will take offense to. When they are enraged, a terrible storm is sure to follow. Other times, they are kind creatures that are more than willing to guide lost travelers.
