Old Town

"Tommy had been missing for three days when he turned up, found walking out of the mists with eyes puffy from crying and clothes torn. The yellowjacks and zippers had been in a tizzy, turning the town upside down, posting on social media and wallpapering the street maps with missing signs. But the locals, the old folks, knew he had been taken by something bad, something that no drones or cameras could find. They could feel the familiar dread hanging in the air like humidity.     Yet they remained hopeful, and when he returned they knew justice had been served. They didn't even need to ask. The perpetrator, whomever they had been, would never be heard from again. The Lost Children saw to it that no innocent ever joined their ranks again."

Demographics

It is said that nobody lives in Old Town unless they grew up there. While this isn't completely true, it is difficult to avoid the rumors of the supernatural happenings here, and this scares off any sort of gentrification.

Government

Old Town is represented by four elected parliament members.

Defences

The doorways and streets of old town are often decorated with wards and symbols to protect the inhabitants. Sometimes, it's not clear if they are there to keep something out, or keep something in.

Infrastructure

Of all the districts in Terminal City, Old Town has the oldest and worst maintained infrastructure. Power and data lines are strung between buildings, heavily laden with hundreds of wires, many of them likely dead but new ones appended when needed. The sewers are an unmapped maze. Odd smells linger here and there. Municipal lighting is irregular and unplanned, leaving huge swathes of shadow on streets at night. Dark alleys abound and are avoided both at day and night.

History

Old town, aka Fairbanks city, was the originally settled town in the Rustbucket. As the populace grew, it expanded out to the rest of the island and then down the peninsula. It quickly lost its identity as Fairbanks and became known as Old Town. All of the skeletons of Terminal City are buried in Old town.

Architecture

Old town has a distinct design that differentiates it from the rest of the city. Best described as 'old timey', the buildings were spectacular in their day. They are were painted in bright pastels and are laden with decorative railing, wrap around porches, tower, turrets and dormers. Even today, in the current cramped age, the apartment buildings maintain this design, many retaining the original structures as facades to retain the feeling. The streets are cobbled and winding, and the fog often lingers here.
