Mountain Dwarf (Tuzutain)

Anatomy

Mountain Dwarves are like the stone from which they make their homes: solid, tough, and unmovable. They are almost as broad as they are tall, averaging around four feet tall, with boulders for shoulders, legs like short stumps. The brown to black beards of both men and women are the pride of clans and kingdoms, often reaching below the knees and braided with precious metals and stones. They are known to live in their massive armor when outside of their mountain holds--which is a rare occurrence--and their faces are often gnarled and deeply-lined with outsize noses and smallish eyes.

Habitat

The Tuzutain reside almost exclusively in Khads, underground mountain holdfasts and vast mining networks that reach deep into Creacia. They often claim the valleys around the entrances to their Khad and perhaps nearby sections of trade roads, but rarely extend beyond a days march from their subterranean homes, feeling unnatural and exposed out in the open. Some Mountain Dwarves leave their Khad permanently, either because of exile or other extraordinary reasons, and have been known to travel and adventure throughout the Centerlands. Occasionally a group of Tuzutain will break off from a Khad to travel the land in search of their own mines and holdfasts.

Culture

Each Khad is its own kingdom, or Khadtor, led by a hereditary line of kings, or Tor. Under the Tor is a regimented, mostly patriarchal meritocracy of clans based on mining and smithing ability, also passed down from generation to generation. The largest Khad in the Centerlands is Khad Korax in the center of the Duskheart Mountains, though there are dozens throughout the land, some kept secret from outside eyes.
