Acute Burnout
Causes
Acute burnout is most often the result of overindulgence of the hio leaf. The oils in the leaf are a powerful stimulant, accelerating the natural rate at which the user's body absorbs Mist. Small doses can be safe, but measuring them is unreliable.
Symptoms
The onset of acute burnout is violent and sudden. Symptoms begin similar to normal Burnout but they quickly accelerate in severity. Nausea, vomiting, and seizures are followed quickly by internal organ failure, and ultimately death.
Treatment
The only conceivable way to stop the effects of acute burnout would be to somehow interrupt the victim's connection to the Mist, but nothing like this had been seen in nature. Even if such a treatment did exist, it would likely be just as deadly as what it was attempting to counteract.
Prognosis
Fatal. Since no treatment is available and onset is so fast, little hope if any remains for the victim.
Prevention
The easiest way to avoid suffering from acute burnout is to simply not use hio leaf. While Oathsworn, Contracted, and Rune users can all suffer from regular burnout with the overuse of their abilities, the acute version is tied almost exclusively to the use of the hio leaf. If one is careful however, the dangers of the leaf can be minimalized. Try to use a plant that someone else has previously tried successfully, and start with the smallest leaf you can find. Be extra careful when upping the dose, as while the size of the leaf does generally correlate to the strength of the dose, it is not a perfectly linear relationship. Remember that this does not eliminate the chances of acute burnout, but merely reduces them.
