Personal history
Mara is the seventh of eight children in a well established mining family. Her father rose in the ranks to act as a foreman, while her mother has had a hand in the business and human resources side of things.
Most of her brothers work in the mines in one way or another, and Mara basically grew up in the business. As a child she loved exploring the established mines and showed an innate skill at navigating the tunnels.
In her early teens she began to show some skill in fighting and identifying the natural dangers in the mines. She was slightly smaller than average, but very agile and dexterous, allowing her to hit and run. With six older, rather rowdy brothers, her quickness allowed her to dodge blows easily. While she could have chosen to use this skill to avoid fights entirely, she preferred to stay in the fight, dealing out quick blows while ducking in and out of their range.
At sixteen her talents for fighting were becoming well known among the mining community. She began assisting in scouting out new sections of the mines, clearing them of dangerous creatures as well as checking for natural hazards. She also began mapping the new sections. Her mother set her the task of keeping the maps of the mines up to date.
When she was eighteen, it became apparent to her parents that her natural talent for fighting could open doors to her outside of the mining industry. They were looking into possible options when a woman doing an inspection of a possible new mine approached them with an offer.
The lady had heard of Mara's skills in fighting and her activities in the mines. She and her husband offered to take Mara to their home in the Lake Strata and pay for her training in monk style fighting, as well as providing her tutors for her other skills, such as music and cartography.
Mara, eager to learn a more refined version of fighting, and to be able to better assist with the mines, happily agreed to the offer. Of course, she was not so thrilled to be leaving home, but most of the brothers were married and living independently at that point, and she had always kind of wanted to see what it was like in the lake strata.
Her first six months were devoted solely to her studies. Not only in the art of fighting, but strategy and planning. While it was not quite expected of her, she also did her best to learn some of the social skills that her patrons seemed so naturally blessed at. The art of sophisticated chit chat was.... awkward to Mara, but she wanted to be able to make her patron's look good.
After the initial training was completed she began taking assignments in the mines. She would travel down to a new area of the mine and scout it out, or visit an older area to check for any changes to update the records and ensure any hazards were recorded. Then she would visit her family for a few days before heading back to her patrons for further training.
After a year or so she made her social debut as the protege of the patrons. She began to attend certain social events to represent them. She had made a few notable discoveries that led to significant mining opportunities and it gave her patrons a chance to show face in being responsible for her training.
Her training continues, though she is reaching a point where she will need to begin making some decisions on her life path.
