Voltaire

Shards of wood were all over the place and water was seeping into the ship. A massive hole in the had been punched in the hull of the ship and now it will likely sink. The crew ran around frantically pulling people out of the water and doing their best to keep the ship afloat. No one knew what actually hit them, but it nearly sunk the ship in one hit. The crew knew they would not survive another hit. The captain was missing and the first mate tried to get the ship turned around, but it was too late, almost all the oars were lost in the first attack. The rest of the crew grabbed whatever they could to put in the water and rowed as hard as they could. It would be a futile measure though. as another massive wave slams into the ship rolling it over. The crew were grabbed and pulled under to the depths by the water itself. Voltaire takes another ship.

Historical Basis

In the early years there were attempts to cross the Endless Sea. Every voyage ended in failure. There appeared to some sort of barrier on the sea that no one ever returned from. Most just disappeared, but there was one ship that washed up in pieces. The voyage of Scantheine ended as all the rest did, but did have a unique story. History says that the ship was attacked as it hit the barrier and was cut in half. The witnesses said that the sea itself shot up through the ship and tore it apart.   There are questions as to the origins of the name Voltaire. There does not seem to be any record of a survivor from the voyage and historians postulate that the survivor could have died within moments of being found and the event was not recorded properly. Voltaire could be the name of a child or of some crew member on the ship as well. Regardless, there is no historical reference for the name and it is considered something made up by a story teller.

Variations & Mutation

Voltaire will sometimes be a giant squid or some other aquatic beast and the survivor isn't always in the story. The ship will always be destroyed though.
