Briarbank Annex Medical Student
Crooked Miles is the birthplace of Lorna Woods. Her parents were farmers who exported their grains to Hale and Otherwhere Countries. Before it became an official primary school, she went to the Little School. Her mother and two merchants taught village children ages 3 - 12. At the age of 12, students with means were sent to school in Oldfaire. At the onset of the Six Year War, a secondary school was introduced. Ascendancy religious leaders were responsible for running the boarding school Lorna attended. She excelled academically and secured a scholarship to a top-tier private school that was closer to her home. Foxglove Day School, located at the foot of Crooked Mile Lighthouse, was supervised by the Ascendancy and a privileged group of wealthy Hale Ambassadors, whose children were enrolled there.
The loneliness of living at the boarding school in Oldfaire came to an end for Norma, as she could now come home every weekend to spend time with her family, much to the delight of her parents. Nevertheless, soon after she began her junior year, the school notified scholarship recipients that they were required to remain on weekends to care for younger children and perform light household chores. Norma's grade suffered, and she became unwell as a result of working on weekends and being harassed by students and teachers.
She fell ill during the summer before her senior year. For a period of two months, she stayed confined to her bed at home. The flu that her parents believed would be deadly actually ended up being her salvation when a sudden tsunami wiped out 80% of Foxglove's students, administration, and faculty. Although she was saved from the disaster, the flu left her too weak to use the grant she earned for Briarbank College. Her situation sparked the idea of opening a night annex in the Crooked Mile.
