Train Engineer, Harman Patton
Berkside Transit Crooked Mile Leg
Harman Patton originally started his career with the Berkside Transit company when he was 17 years old. He was a firebox man who shoveled coal into the locomotive firebox. After ten years of shoveling, he apprenticed for a retiring engineer who taught him to read. His primary aim was to arrive and depart on time. His second aim was to keep the train running, regardless of how many passengers complained about his jerky rides and weather beaten tracks. Berkside paid him less than other companies paid their employees, but they keep engineer accident rates to themselves. Lester was a drinker that likely contributed to five of the six accidents that he caused in 15 years. The more accidents the company covered up for him, the better chance he would stick around after the Six Year War, when the community promised to ensure better safety records. Burkhead worked hard to avoid any mention of safety. Harman's side occupation was smuggling. Twice a week, he transports Otherwhere liquors from the port through the tunnel.. He knows where all the passageway entries and exits are located. He is rarely held accountable for his side occupations, but leaving passengers stranded is a complaint that he can lose his job over.
