Mutthawk
The Mutthawk is a Wyvernid native to the forests of Scythar's Tail. It is a medium-sized, carnivorous Wyvernid known to feed off of the smaller avian species on the peninsula. Mutthawks tend to be about 4 feet in length, and have a wingspan of over 6 feet. They are solitary creatures and are not known to travel in herds or prefer familial social structures. They are quite territorial, but do not mind contact with humanoids who are away from their nests.
Scholars say that the Mutthawk garnered its colloquial name from Goblin populations, who called it a Mutak - meaning hunter. It is believed that Mutthawks, while not domesticated by Goblins, aided early Goblin tribes in hunts. Mutthawks tend to circle around herds of Hillhen or Ptarmigans, seeking to snatch a weak or unsuspecting meal: Goblin hunting parties would follow Mutthawks, using them to track elusive bird herds. Juwonais populations who came to the region in the 1800s likely mistook their Goblinoid name for the common spelling of Muthawk, believing the creature to be named after hawks due to their similar behavior and hunting patterns. An extra "t" was added on later, likely due to settlers calling domesticated Mutthawks "mutts".
