"I am grateful for my body, which is healthy. I am grateful for the food I have to eat. I am grateful for the dome which homes me. Today, I will use my gratitude to make the world a better place."— a common school child gratitude mantra
"Be grateful for the dome" is a common saying in
Twilight City, a place where the surrounding badlands can exceed 50 degrees centigrade with deadly UV rays in the height of a summer's noon.
The dome removes the need to wear protective masks, glasses and clothing in the city. It filters the air and regulates the temperature, making the city a comfortable place to live. It even causes the
Twilight Glows, a rare light phenomena much looked forward to by the citizens of the city.
"Dome Sickness" - the myth
When dome cities were first conceived of, there was a fear from some scientists that humans would get "dome sickness", a form of psychosis form staying beneath the dome for too long, caused by the vibrations of the filter. This fear was soon debunked as pseudoscience, and the term came to mean "cabin fever", from staying inside a small apartment or space too long without getting outside. It's still used to this day.
The Cult of the Dome Mother
About ten years after
Twilight City was built, there was a surge of dead, mutilated bodies found in the streets of Lower Twilight City, completely drained of blood. This was finally traced back to a cult that was worshipping the Dome as a kind of mother.
Hooks:
A mutilated, drained body has been found in the streets by the police. Is this the return of the Cult of the Dome Mother?
Recent terror threats have been made to blow up the dome's generators.
the Luddites in the Twilight Badlands still believe in Dome Sickness, and are suspicious of the inhabitants of Twilight City.
