Fiskandel

Orrian Capital of Fishing and Sailing

Fiskandel is the first settlement founded by Hurrikaani Clan and is the capital of its territory. It is situated on the west coast of Orri with direct access to the dangerous Shattered Sea.

Government

As the capital of Hurrikaani Clan's territory, Fiskandel is home to its jarl. The jarl rules over the clan as a whole, delegating leadership of smaller towns and villages to lendmenn. Unlike other capitals, though, Fiskandel does not have a longhouse for its jarl; instead, the Hurrikaani leader lives in a dwelling like any other, and is out to sea as often as not.   For the other Orrian clans, a jarl typically rules until they die, or until they abdicate their throne voluntarily. However, Hurrikaani Clan's leadership is chosen differently; they believe that Proceyya, the Orrian goddess of the sea, wind and rain, anoints their jarls with divine signals from the water. These signs can come in any number of forms, from strange weather patterns, to miraculous shipwreck survivals, to bizarre marine animal behaviour. This belief is deeply ingrained in all Hurrikaani, and any Hurrikaan jarl would abdicate without protest if Proceyya announced that it was time for a change in leadership.

Defences

Fiskandel is among the least fortified of all the Orrian capitals; in fact, it hasn't any defensive structures at all. Instead, the Hurrikaani trust that the Shattered Sea will divert invaders who would do them harm. So far, the treacherous waters have done just that.   Invasion from inland is a factor to consider, but the residents of Fiskandel do not fear this for two reasons. First, any foreign invaders would have to fight past either Fånga or Prata Clan to ever reach Fiskandel by land, and Orrian fighters are no force to be trifled with. Secondly, even if invaders made it to their capital, or if ever another clan turned against them, the entire population of Fiskandel could board their vessels and evacuate to sea with next to no delay. They wouldn't give a second thought to the loss of their land or any possessions left behind.

Industry & Trade

Orrians say that every Hurrikaan is either a fisher or a shipwright. This is incorrect; in truth, every Hurrikaan is both. With imported lumber to supplement their own forests, the Hurrikaani built and sail their vessels and bring back enormous hauls of fish to support their needs. The other clans are happy to trade for their marine produce in exchange for lumber, furs and dairy products. They are the poorest of the clans in terms of wealth, but because of their aversion to materialism they aren't bothered by this. As their motto goes, the sea provides them with all they need.

Infrastructure

Compared to the other Orrian capitals, Fiskandel closer resembles a large settlement. Though it's population is far greater than any other Hurrikaan village, the humble wooden huts and shacks that house the Hurrikaani in Fiskandel are no different than anywhere else in their territory. The simple construction and minimalist mentality owes primarily to the fact that the Hurrikaani feel more at home at sea than on land, and most consider their coastal dwellings to be temporary means of lodging while they unload hauls of fish and conduct repairs on their vessels.   Any roads in Fiskandel are simple dirt paths. Few Hurrikaani travel very far inland. This makes horses and wagons somewhat uncommon in this region, lessening the need for smooth riding surfaces.   Fiskandel does boast a huge number of wooden docks that just out into the Shattered Sea. Hurrikaani Clan owns more sailing and fishing vessels than all of the other clans combined; indeed, in total there are too many to dock all at once along Orri's entire west coast. Fortunately, the Hurrikaan sailors so prefer to stay at sea that the docks seldom approach capacity.

Assets

The bulk of Hurrikaani's wealth comes from its fishing hauls, which sustain them physically as well as financially via trade with the other clans. The residents of Fiskandel would profess that they have nothing of value besides the lumber beneath their feet and the sails above their heads.

Architecture

Fiskandel's buildings are small, simple and sufficient for their purpose. There is little to no effort put into aesthetic when Hurrikaani build their dwellings; they instead prefer to spend their time and talent designing, building and improving their ships and boats. Everything is built of wood in Fiskandel, with thatch roofs and hide door flaps.   Hurrikaani boats, on the other hand, are often marvels to behold. The Hurrikaani make use of innovative designs to increase the speed and maneuverability of their ships, allowing them to easily out-sail any foe in the water. The Hurrikaani artists too concentrate their efforts on their vessels, making their ships as impressive in form as they are in function.

Geography

Fiskandel is built on the west coast of Orri, with easy access to the Shattered Sea. The land is relatively flat, allowing for manageable travel on foot or by wagon. To the north, the plains become cold and dull as the fertile lands give way to the snow-kissed fir forests.

Natural Resources

Fiskandel was built adjacent to the Vannskog forest, which supplied sufficient lumber to construct their homes and their first wave of ships. The Hurrikaani still do process their own lumber, but they also supplement their needs with imported wood from Skapa Clan. Aside from this, the land on which Fiskandel sits offers little else.   The sea, however, is a bountiful source of food and tradable goods if one is brave, talented and knowledgeable enough to reap the harvest. In this way, the Hurrikaani consider the water to be the ultimate provider.
