Janissary
The Janissaries are a group of elite infantry unites that form the royal families household troops and personal guard. Janissary troops are led into battle by their Emir or by the Sultan himself. Some members of the royal family may seek to become Janissaries themselves, or be selected for training by elder Janissaries during military campaigns.
These soldiers make up the main portion of many Provence's standing armies, the rest being recruited or drafted during conflicts. All Janissaries are loyal to their personal Emir first, then to the ruling Emir of their Provence, and finally the Sultan.
Janissaries are recruited between the ages of 5-15 to begin their training in Muqadas Al'Jibal. They are officially granted their title of Kulu when they complete their training around age 25. Some protegees will complete their training by age 20 and are given special assignments, protecting emirs and their families as part of their personal guard.
Both men and women can become Janissaries, though the dominant amount of Janissaries are men.
Origins
The first Janissary soldiers were slaves taken from the families of conquered lands. In the formative years of the organization, Janissaries were celebrate and served the Shah and his family until their death, usually in the line of duty. After several coups, assassination attempts, and the realization that forcing your enemies to protect you is a bad plan for safety, Shah Mehmed Akthar granted the Janissaries the Three Freedoms.Remove these ads.
