Automation & Constructs
There are three main types of automation: Clockwork Automation, Spell (or Rune) Automation, and Living Automation.
Clockwork Automation is done by making clockwork devices that are powered by mechanisms and physics.
Spell Automation is done by putting Spell Scrolls next to each other in a way that they chain trigger one after another. This is for example how Trains operate. Spell Automation is the most costly if it's working on a loop, since with each use the scroll is consumed. However Spell Automation is still the most effective in certain situations, such as traps or security. Many might underestimate it, but there's nothing as effective as a chain of spells.
A more sophisticated version of Spell Automation - is the Magitech Rune Automation, where instead of using scrolls, one simply writes down runes into an interpreter that casts the spell itself. These interpreters are usually inlaid with Blood Crystals.
Living Automation can be most easily described as making a construct to do the automated task. This is the most flexible way of automation, due to the constructs' flexibility when it comes to their tasks, however its base cost in both gold and time is astoundingly high. One might still have to make the investment if what they want to automate simply cannot be done by clockwork devices. Living Automation also gave birth to our first artificial species: the Forged. An official document on Living Automation can be read here: Programmable Intelligence - the Forged.

Discovery
Clockwork Automation blossomed during the Age of Industry, while Spell and Living Automation came during the Age of Leviathans. Spell Automation is said to be discovered around 50 AoL, while Living Automation was discovered in 486 AoL.
