Datum is a very old society, and with any complex enough social grouping power imbalances begin to form.With enough hardship and problematic elements in play, these imbalances become more pronounced. Some are more comfortable than others. Some are better treated. Some are shielded from hardship altogether.
Thus describes the Essential, who is effectively the 1%-er of Datum.
"Essential" is a title referring to a program of sufficient power, wealth, authority or social clout that they are deemed as necessary to Darum's continued operation. Hence "essential". In a Post-2nd Crash Datum where byte shortages, the Infection, infrastructure problems and civil unrest are rampant Essentials deal with none of the consequences.
They are the privileged elites and the untouchables on top of society.
