Firewall
The self-declared caretaker of the System of Datum.
Structure
Firewall has stood vigil over Datum for nearly twenty millennia and in that time the organization has grown. It has become bloated, unwieldy and deeply bureaucratic. It is a massive beast full of departments, ministries and task forces for every conceivable facet of Datum's management and is weighed down by long-established protocols and miles of red tape.
This is not to say that Firewall is incapable of getting anything done, but rather it's structure serves to showcase the disparity between it's priorities and everything else. Some ministries are far better funded and supported than others, and the only time Firewall seems capable of quick, timely action seems to be related to it's own self-preservation and when serving in the interests of it's own higher ups or other Essentials.
Public Agenda
Firewall was initially founded on the principle that it exists to safeguard and maintain Datum to prevent a calamity like the First Crash from ever happening again. This is still the case, but millennia of complacency, and internal rot have warped this mission statement.
Through their actions it has become clear that Firewall favors other Programs and Processes over others, with Essentials getting the highest priority and deference. This has only become even more apparent after the Second Crash and the Infection's arrival, as most of Firewall's resources are focused more towards the Core of the city.
Assets
Ostensibly all public utilities and infrastructure- including the remaining active bitplants and the Wire- belong to Firewall.
History
Public claims and internal records claim that Firewall has been in existence since the founding of Datum itself, though there are no logs from V1 substantiating that. In reality, Firewall was created from whole cloth during the Upgrade in 1428 V2 from programs hand selected by the User due to their actions during the crisis. These founders would have a constant working relationship with the User until 1433 V2, which was the last time the User logged into the System.
From that point onward Firewall would operate with complete authority, citing the User's mandate as their right for governance.
