As governor of Aistwald, the border province, Halgrave dedicated his life to defending Hangard against goblin attacks. He fought in many battles of the 30-year Jingthol Conflict against the goblins. During one battle, when Bruinan was 14, Halgrave was killed in combat with Montenhelm warlocks while trying to protect Bruinan. This played a major role in shaping Bruinan's life.   Significance: As Bruinan's uncle and guardian, Halgrave represented martial authority and the weight of duty and service to kingdom and code. His disapproval was a major motivator for Bruinan. His death at the hands of the warlocks Bruinan had awakened was a tragedy that impacted Bruinan deeply. Halgrave's sternness and focus on duty made him a complicated parental figure for the orphaned Bruinan.   In summary, Halgrave Wilhelm was a hardened military commander who played a major role in raising the protagonist Bruinan and instilling in him a sense of duty, despite not always showing him affection. His death in battle was a formative moment for Bruinan.
