Selûne

Our Lady of Silver

Selûne, also known as Our Lady of Silver, the Moonmaiden, and the Night White Lady, presides over the moon, stars, navigators, wanderers, seekers, and non-evil lycanthropes. She is said to govern the world's tides, mothers' reproductive cycles, and lycanthrope shifting. Those who worship her believe that the moon is Selûne herself, watching over the material plane from her celestial realm.   Like the cycles of the moon, Selûne had many and changing moods and natures. Her faithful, coming from many walks of life, viewed her in countless different ways, and she reflected this. Sometimes she was enthusiastic, vivacious, joyous, and majestic, given to action and dance. At other times, she was subdued, motherly, and almost poetic or tranquil and embracing. Then she was remote and weighed down by sadness at defeats and tragedies, even those that happened long, long ago. Finally, she could be aggressive and fierce, but cold, and with little mercy for her enemies. These shifting personalities made her versatile. Nevertheless, she was viewed as a calm power.   Nevertheless, at all times, Selûne was caring and accepting of most beings, and forgiving of most of her followers' faults. She was both ageless and ancient. She was quietly mystical and, as a being of chaos, well used to change. She had a serene and peaceful nature and was slow to anger; she would not fight if she could help it, but nor did she hold back if she must. She was fiercely protective when confronted by evil.   To indicate her favor or presence or to help mortals, Selûne might send owls; weredragons or song dragons; certain breeds of good lycanthropes or other shapechanging creatures; or one of her loyal planetar servants known as the Shards. Other signs were the colors blue and silver and the appearance of moonstones. Specific reasons vary by individual.

Divine Realm

According to legend, Selûne dwells in a realm known as the Gates of the Moon, an endless ocean reflecting the stars in the astral sea. In the center of the ocean, Selûne dwells in an island palace, guarded by her patron creatures.
Before the cataclysm, the Gates were regarded as an individual plane of existence, but after the Cataclysm, they now float freely in the Astral Sea.

Holidays

There are a lot of traditions that even those who don't directly worship her partake in: Hunters will usually offer some prayer or tribute to Selûne before going out at night, thieves will pray for luck from the moonmaiden before starting a job, sailors will pray to her in hopes she guides them through their voyage safely. A regular ritual is the "night stalk", as it is often known, an occasion for worship and communion with the goddess, in which the clergy reaffirmed their nearness to the Night White Lady. This could be just a simple solitary night-time walk under the moonlight, hence its name. More involved ceremonies involved dances under the open sky and prayers in the moonlight, with libations of milk and wine over a central altar. These were held on the nights of every full moon and new moon.   Another important ritual is the "Conjuring of the Second Moon" which is conducted on Shieldmeet, a day that occurs only once every 4 years (like a leap year) on the last day of Morning Star (essentially January). On Shieldmeet , at every temple to Selûne in Delvia, the clergy chanted in coordination and the confluence of their devotional energy summoned the Shards, the planetar servants of the goddess. For one night only, the Shards would do as the clergy bade them, most often to heal the deathly sick or to combat the forces of darkness. However, at dawn the next day, the Shards elevated one mortal priestess to their ranks, before they departed for the planes.   There is a lesser known tradition conducted by wandering preists or worshippers of Selûne. Many shrines to the moonmaiden exist around Delvia, not always with a temple nearby, so wandering priests or lone worshippers of Selûne would make it their duty to visit their nearest Shrine once per year, on the winter solstice, to complete a simple ritual that would reaffirm the shrine's connection to the moon
