The Stars, the Stars

The Stars, the Stars, they once were ours,
We came here from the Earth and Mars.

Our ships sailed from Star to Star,
From the Earth to where we are.
In the night, from place to place,
we sailed through the dark of space.

The Stars, the Stars, from thence we fell,
And there again we will dwell.

Ships fell from the highest skies,
no one heard our frightened cries.
No one sees; our strength dies,
The young, the old, the able, the wise.

The Stars, the Stars, they are our home,
Among them we again will roam.

From the Stars we fell and fell,
We won't forget this story we tell.
From the ashes we will rise,
we will again sail through the skies.

The Stars, the Stars, in us they burn,
We know someday we will return.

Summary

The poem describes the legend of The Fall from the Stars and promises, or perhaps prophesies, a return of Humans back to their home in the stars.

Historical Basis

The events and places described in the poem appear to be the same as in the legend of The Fall from the Stars. Although some claim that those events are historical and that Humans came to Derkomai from another place (presumably "Earth and Mars"), others say that is impossible, pointing to the fact that Humans can interbreed with Elvirim and even Orkrim, so they must be native to Derkomai.

I love the controversy regarding the historical accuracy of the legend. Of the people who argue that it is accurate, does it figure in their belief system (religion)? Is this a song that is widespread, or only preserved among a region or minority culture? You kind of hinted at it… ah future reading for me!

Thanks for your kind words! I hope you find Derkomai interesting; I've tried to develop a consistent mythology about how Humans arrived on Derkomai and why the world is at it is. I appreciate whatever feedback you might have!

I love how the poem evokes a nostalgic melancholy with the image of humans falling from the stars. The poem being so old that no even knows its origins or whether it's actually referring to the Fall legend combines nicely with that, I think!

Thank you! I appreciate any feedback I get on Derkomai, so if you have any comments on any of my other articles, I'd like to hear them.
