Kalakhuilani
Every nation with even a tenuous connection to the sea, be it by river or coastal port, has a navy. Geirstðr famously has one of the largest martial navies in the world, which they have plied to powerful effect throughout history, while Makhtok has an impressive force of riverboats to monitor the waterway that is the heart of their nation.
Kalakhuilani, on the other hand, is a navy with a country.
A nation found on a chain of a few hundred islands of varying sizes, every citizen has to know how to sail if they want to get anything done. It's not an uncommon sight to see children no older than nine or ten crewing a small schooner as if it was a ship of the line. The islands vary in size, some enough to house a hundred thousand, or small enough that they are swallowed up by the waves and add to the dangers of the local waters alongside the coral reefs and shoals. Not to mention the corsairs on the outermost islands.
Half the famous ship commanders of history bear a name with the classic Kalakhulan melody to it, and their exploits each more legendary than the last. Admiral Kamaauoha and his battlegroup's last stand, in the Straights of Gattal; sinking three dozen Ochite ships, including their three first-rate ships and securing Kalakhulan navy dominance in the western hemisphere for the next century. Hinuhinu 'Saw Tooth' Kamakeoaina and his half a dozen escapes from, and defeats of, pirate hunters trained specifically to capture him. Even to the first expedition to the north by Nohea Kalei and her intrepid flotilla.
The Kalakhuilan are the heart of the ocean and it's many offices, and their pantheon reflects that. Almost every one of their gods has their domain split between something and the sea. Be it knowledge, or crops, or adventure , or right of arms, the sea is set deeply in the heart of them all.
