Magvaris Public Safety Service (mæg'vɑɹi)
The Magvaris family, also known as the Magvaris Public Safety Service, are a family of Eagen who swear their powers of foresight to the safety and well-being of Agri. The family line encompasses nearly any Eagen who holds the Magvaris name, and as they have no qualms about marrying commoners, it has become quite large and diverse.
The main branch of the Magvaris family takes residence in Santenne, with secondary branches in Verresel and Reinnas. Other members of the family are scattered in cities throughout Agri. Typically, all cities have at least a few Magvaris stationed within them, proportional to the city's population.
Magvaris agents use their foresight to peer into the near future, predicting events not years or months but days and hours in advance. This short timeframe loosens the restrictions on speaking clearly about their prophecies, but gives local authorities little time to respond to any divined threats. Due to this, the Magvaris focus not on immediate dangers but on suspicious activity—sometimes mere minutes or seconds ahead of time—that can then be reported to warn of potential escalation.
While one might assume that Magvaris stationed in a city would focus their attention solely on that city, such is usually not the case. Active agents scan the near future of the entire region, reporting on anything they notice through an instant communication network. The exceptions are the three official branches, who each have a few agents concerned solely with their own city, and a few outlying cities in which the noble family has a Magvaris enlisted to focus all attention on their city's affairs.
Other groups may work with the Magvaris for services which are not directly benefitted by foresight. For instance, city police are involved with apprehending criminals and bringing quest villains into custody, while local adventurers are often directed by Magvaris announcements to track down and defeat villains. In some cases, Magvaris will be called in during interrogations for a second service: predicting the weal or woe of any planned activities of co-conspirators. This allows other groups to direct their attention primarily to activities forecast as successful.
The Magvaris are considered a noble line, and thus are eligible for entrance into House Pluma. However, only the three recognized branches of the family have substantial wealth, with those outside the branches falling firmly into the upper middle class, and even their wealth has been declining in recent years.
