Eagen (iəgɛn')

Eagen are a well-established mortal species on Deus, appearing in the legend of the Protagonist and being revered for their powers and mystery. They are one of the four Second Course species, alongside Humans, Velsen, and Profundem, and according to records they were the first of these species to be created.

Eagen have a similar appearance to humans, and some theorize that the human model was meant to be an improvement or a one-uppance of Dornara's creation. The only physical traits that separate Eagen from humans are their pointed ears of varying lengths and the third eye in the center of their forehead.

There are three races of Eagen, differentiated only by skin color: light, medium, or dark. Eagen are unique in that these three races went unnamed, and many consider them to simply be variants on a single race. All Eagen have straight or wavy hair, ranging from blond to black—typically, the lighter the skin, the lighter the hair, though this is not always the case. Eagen can have any eye color found in humans, though they tend towards lighter shades, and their height has the same range as humans.

Dornara, a goddess of time, created the Eagen with the power of foresight. With training, an Eagen may learn to see precise visions years into the future, and the most powerful natural-born mages may see decades into the future or even have visions of the present and past. The most powerful Eagen, if the legend of the Protagonist is to be taken at face value, had visions reaching across at least two Courses[dubious—discuss]. Even untrained Eagen catch frequent glimpses of events days ahead, with the rare vision of over a month.

However, as the gift of precognition is powerful, it is also dangerous, and the more so the farther into the future one goes. Eagen who speak their prophecies clearly risk drawing the ire of Time Itself, and may succumb to rapid aging and death, even instant decay in extreme situations. To avoid this fate, many prophets speak in riddles, rhymes, and other vague language to impart their predictions without meeting such a fate. However, the nearer the futures one sees, the less hazardous it is to describe them, and Eagen who glimpse less than a day into the future can typically describe their visions in great detail without fear of harm.

Eagen are found in every part of the continent. While they are outnumbered by humans and the local majority species, they are never an uncommon sight. Powerful seers, however, are rare, and many are employed by noble houses.

Naming Traditions

Eagen names have a high occurrence of vowels and doubled letters, with strong representation of the vowels E and I and low occurence of back vowels. Diphthongs are often found at the ends of given names, but are much rarer in other contexts, and names will often observe the practice, otherwise limited to human surnames and Aquan Dean, of omitting final nonnasal consonants in pronunciation. Most names are three or more syllables long and almost none are monosyllabic.

Eagen names lack a clear gender distinction. Names ending in a consonant or I are often masculine, while those ending in an E or A are often feminine, but this rule does not hold firm for all given names. Eagen surnames are typically unique, and two Eagen with the same surname are likely not only related, but familiar with one another.
