Condor Fighting Pits

The Condor Fighting Pits were formed at some point during the Darkened Years in Oas. To begin with the Pits were simply a way for the Oasian people to find their next leader or Blood Chief but they expanded over time and now also provide entertainment and gambling opportunities to interested citizens. However, the champion of the Condor Fighting Pits may still challenge the Blood Chief of Oas to a Blood Fight, a fight to the death, for leadership of the nation. A large portion of the proceeds from the Pits is placed directly into the vaults of Oas to bolster the economy of the island nation.   The Pits have spread slowly onto the mainland of Beregan and can be found in most of the major cities of the Zeurst Sea, as well as one in each of the settlements of Oas. The eponymous pits are packed dirt arenas with 15 ft tall sides and the capacity to add or remove unexpected elements to the fight at will. A Referee oversees each bout that occurs in the pits, excluding Blood Fights, and ensures that none of the competitors blatantly cheat. All fighters are required to wear magic suppressing shackles and to forfeit all weapons while they fight. The variety of fights have expanded over the years and now all manner of free-for-alls and team based fights occur frequently.

Structure

The leader of the Condor Fighting Pits is called the Blood Chief and is as well as being the champion of the pits, the leader of Oas. The Blood Chief is required to accept all Blood Fight challenges while also managing the Pits and the nation they now lead. When a new fighter wins the Blood Fight they complete a ritual journey carrying the body of the former Blood Chief to Tor Dex, the Burial Tower before taking up the mantle.   Beneath the Blood Chief are the Challengers who have fought their way through the tournaments of the Pits to earn the right to a Blood Fight. As the Blood Fight is a fight to the death, many Challengers decide to not immediately use their right to challenge and instead wait for an opportune moment or until the current Blood Chief has been weakened. A Challenger must win at least one tournament a year to maintain their place and their right to challenge.   Beneath the Challengers are the Referees who preside over the bouts of the Pits. Referees are often former Challengers who never found their chance for the Blood Fight or were too worn down to continue fighting. A Referee has a the responsibility of maintaining the integrity of the fights while also ensuring they're sufficiently entertaining for the watching crowds.   Beneath the Referees are the Fighters which include everyone that has ever fought a bout in the Pits. Fighters have no real power in the hierarchy of Pits, at least not until they become Challengers and are just seen as fresh meat until they begin winning.
