Chaos Quadrapod (/ˈkeɪɒs kwɒdrəpɒd/)

The Untamed Beasts

A cluster of four suckered tentacles with a pulsing mass of ethereal Light as its central body, the chaos quadrapod is a creature of the Far Realm, and it channels the anarchic power of that plane as it destroys all in its path. The quadrapod ambulates by flinging its mucus-covered tentacles out and dragging itself along, creating a horrid slurping sound as it advances relentlessly toward its prey.
The Menagerie fought one of these in the Ziggurat of Tharizdun, below Skola Vale after it was summoned by Bargle.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A chaos quadrapod was a horror from the Far Realm. The creature was bent on spreading the disruptive energy from that plane and on causing destruction everywhere it went.

Description

The chaos quadrapod consisted of four mucus-covered, suckered tentacles protruding from a central body apparently made of pulsing Light. The tentacles were responsible for the creature's movement, dragging it along while making disturbing slurping sounds.

Ecology and Habitats

A creature of the Far Realms.

Behaviour

Combat

The aggressive creature could attack its prey by wrapping and squeezing them with its tentacles, which could reach as far as 15 feet (4.6 meters) from its main body. It was also capable of unleashing some of the energy from the Far Realm onto an area within a range of 60 feet (18 meters), causing an explosion of sickly ethereal Light that could temporarily stun all creatures within a radius of 20 feet (6.1 meters). Chaos quadrapods were resistant against magical effects.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Usage

Illithids used their intellect devourers for hunting. Normally, they had them possess and puppeteer the bodies of their victims and then use them to lure other creatures into the illithids' hunting grounds, so the mind flayers could consume their brains themselves or dominate them as new thralls. Otherwise, they kept them as guard Beasts and even as pets, while an intellect glutton might be ridden as a mount.   More generally, other intelligent creatures who dared to use intellect devourers would set them to Work as guardians or as predators for some purpose. By taking a host body and posting as their last victim, they made for excellent spies.   The body parts of intellect devourers could be utilized as material components in potions and magic items associated with mind control and ESP. Dried blood of Intellect Devourer (or brain mole, or formian) was a possible component in a Sending. A whole body was needed for a certain Potion that bolstered one's psionics attack and defense powers. Most notably, the brain of an Intellect Devourer was a key reagent in the cure for the disease known as the Wailing Death.

Harvesting

instructions
Instructions: Because this creature is an Aberration, the player should roll a Arcana Check using the DCs in the table below. On a success, the player is able to harvest the item. On a failure, the item cannot be harvested (either because the character is not skilled enough, or because the item is ruined). The DM should note that many of the items have an expiration, and can not be sold or used after the expiration has passed.

Most Crafting Items have an acronym associated with it, such as "DMG". These acronyms refer to specific guide Books. For example, "DMG" refers to the "Dungeon Master's Guide". The acronyms for HHH and HHH2 refer to Hamund's Harvesting Handbook, a homebrew harvesting guide that offers a variety of homebrew (not official) magic items.

Civilization and Culture

History

In 2020 there was a fight in a Ziggurat of Tharizdun, below Skola Vale where Bargle summoned a Chaos Quadrapod. They were able to kill it with the killing blow coming from a lingering Cloud of Daggers set by Calliope Galanodel.   In the Year of the Duplicitous Courtier, 1496 DR, a chaos quadrapod invaded a pocket dimension connected to a portal aboard the sailboat Dangerous Business, following a confrontation between Dran Enterprises and the Six. The creature remained confined to the self-contained space while the ship was docked at Luskan for over a month, infusing it with energy from the Far Realm.

If the target is a creature, it is grappled (escape DC 14). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained.
