X-Factor

The colloquial name given to a condition that afflicts an extremely rare few in the Monimal populace. The condition manifests usually in early childhood as a form of extreme illness coupled with an early form of whatever ability they might end up with. Those that come through the bedridden side of the condition find themselves with a unique and uncanny ability. These abilities are almost entirely random and vary widely in use and potential impact. It should be noted that it has been observed that if those with family members who share the status of having an X-Factor their abilities will often be similar in function.

Transmission & Vectors

The condition cannot be transmitted and it is assumed that those disposed to having the condition are born to it.

Causes

Throughout Monimal history, the exact cause of the appearance of an X-Factor is largely a mystery to even the most esteemed scientist and physicians. Theories exist that certain conditions in the birth can set a child up to acquire the condition including certain sectors of the population having more chance for it than others.

Treatment

Should child be afflicted with the telltale signs of the beginning stages of X-Factor manifesting, it is advised that the child is taken to the local medical facilities where they will be monitored and kept comfortable while the stages play out. Once the process has begun there is no know way to stop it. Due to societal prejudice, the facilities are often under deep security and separate from other patients with most everything being kept discreet. Often however many parents and children are promptly turned away from receiving treatment in some facilities, again due to societal disdain and prejudice for those afflicted, in which case, the parent might take it upon themselves to keep the child comfortable while the process plays out.

Prognosis

Should the process be especially grueling for the child, often correlating with the "scale" of the X-Factor, it is entirely likely the child will succumb to the early stages. Should they survive however, with X-Factor fully manifest, the mortality rate drops significantly as it becomes a usually benign chronic condition.
