Torres Birthday Celebration

Torres are particularly found of their birthdays. When someone joined Torres society that day is considered their birthday, and the community celebrates the joy of having them in their community for another year. The birthday celebration begins like many things in Torres culture, with music. The birthday tortle's closest friends and family with sing their song, a song written specifically for the tortle that represents their life. Then other members of the community will add to the song to represent the their accomplishments over the last year, and finally the friends and family will take the additions and weave them into the original song completing the story of their life. Then the birthday tortle spends the rest of the day with his friends and family memorizing the song, helping him celebrate and reflect on his life, family, friends, his place in the community, and the choices he made.

History

Originally birthdays where not special occasions, as everyone had joined the group the same day as they set out from Ea, but over time new people joined, and Tor Day was not the same for everyone. Everyone got together and decided they would have small celebrations throughout the year, and make Tor Day the day to recognize the beginning of the community instead of a united birthday celebration.

Participants

Early in a tortles life, their song is woven by their parents, as they can truly express the feelings of joy and love they have and the tortle has few interactions with others to help build their story. As they grow the number of people participating in their song grows with their influence on the community.   If a member is new to the community, a favored friend will sit with them for the week before their 1st birthday, learning their life story up to that point, and trying to encapsulate it in a solely instrumental intro, then words are added after the intro in their first birthday celebration.
