Super

Superhumans, also known as Supers and Powered are a subset of the human species that manifest superhuman abilities. These abilities range from supernaturally developed human abilities to outright physics-defying feats of what can only be described as "magic". As they can not reproduce with normal humans, scientists consider them a new species, though such a classification remains controversial for reasons of civil rights.

Classification

In order classify, categorise and assess the abilities of Superhumans, many countries have developed systems by which the nature of a superhuman's special abilities can be grouped and efficiently communicated.

In the United States

Laws in the U.S. make using one's superpowers in a line of work not regulated by the government illegal, though a blind eye is often turned on supers who use their powers either constructively or in non-system relevant sectors. As the only normal line of work for supers tends to be in law enforcement, the country distinguishes between four broad types of supers:
  • Sanctioned Supers
  • Vigilantes
  • Rogues
  • Independants

Sanctioned Supers

The term "sanctioned" refers to any and all supers that work either for the government or for a company sanctioned and authorised to employ supers by the Department of Superhuman Affairs. It is also used as a shorthand for legally authorised supers in the law enforcement sector in general, as most jobs for supers exist solely in that capacity.

Vigilantes

Vigilantes are any and all supers who have made enforcement of the law their primary objective, but refuse to enter into any employment with the government or company authorised to carry this out. While their reasons vary, they are technically criminals under the law, though sanctioned supers and police alike often turn a blind eye on them due to the valuable service they often provide. Their moniker is mostly used to distinguish them from Independents and Rogues.

Rogue

Rogue is a term referring to any super who uses their abilities in a criminal capacity. This refers to activities that are considered to be breaking law aside from the ban on the usage of super powers without being sanctioned. It is also a label applied to superhuman criminals in general, even if they do not employ their powers in their line of work. Their existence is the main reason for the prevalence of supers in modern law enforcement.

Independents

Independent supers are those who do not employ their powers to commit or fight crime, and also do not work for the government. They often sell their powers as part of a business. Depending on their willingness to cooperate with the authorities and unwillingness to aid Rogues, they are often turned a blind eye upon. This category contains large amounts of Thinkers and Tinkers, as their abilities lend themselves to civilian application the easiest most of the time. Some economists consider their influence on the markets dangerous and advocate restricting their involvement in public projects and limiting their access to setting up financial ventures.
