Superhuman Detention Center, North Branch
The Superhuman Detention Center, North Branch, also colloquially known as North Branch or simply just North is a jointly operated Amercian-Canadian high security prison facility for Superhumans . Located on an oil rig-like structure in the middle of Lake Superior , it is considered the most secure of the three specialised superhuman high security prisons in the U.S. and the most secure superhuman prison in North America. Worldwide, it is ranked the considered the 2nd most secure super prison, with only Camp Zhuravlev in the Russian Federation being considered more secure.
Due the security concerns, the precise number of wardens, including normal humans and superhumans stationed at North Branch is a closely kept secret.
To be "sent North" has become a colloquial phrase referring to being imprisoned at North branch. It is sometimes also used as a synonym for a sentence to lifelong imprisonment with no chance for parole.
Purpose / Function
The most secure prison for supers in the entire United States, North Branch serves as a life sentence prison for supers that have commited the most henious of crimes and/or can not be safely imprisoned elsewhere.
Architecture
Built on an oil-rig like plattform on Lake Superior in Minnesota, close to the Canadian border. The plattform houses both the personell and a multitude of defense systems aimed to protect and contain the prisoners.
The actual prison wards are built underwater, at a depth of at least 100 meters. While there is a shared ward, many of the prisoners at North Branch live in solitary confinement and are never allowed to leave their cells, with the more dangerous ones being kept under the constant influence of drugs to dull their senses and keep them docile. Every cell and room can be individually sealed off and opened to the surrounding waters in case of an emergency or attempted escape.
The cells and prison wards are supplied via drones and robots, as no actual wardens are allowed near the cells due to risk of an attempt to free prisoners. Air and waste are recycled in a automated facitlity at the bottom of the lake.
A single elevator on the plattform provides access to the lower wards, though permission to enter is rarely granted to anyone. Additional cells can be built on land, then shipped to the rig where they are slotted into the elevator system and moved into the frame underwater. As such, the entire prison ward underwater is modular and can be moved around from main control.
History
Built last of the three U.S. prisons for supers in the late 2000s. A joint project financed by the United States and Canada, North Branch was designed in cooperation between The Architect , Praxidike , Suspense and Piégeage . Due to the extensive incorporation of tinker tech during the construction process, the project took over four years to complete.
Officially opened in 2009, the first inmate was "sent North" two months later.
As the prison population never decreases unless an inmate dies, the number of inmates has since shot up to now over 100 prisoners.
