Inquisitor
Once the investigative arm of The Church of the Eternal Dawn, the role was abolished after accusations arose of inquisitors abusing their authority and being used as spies by Church and Kingdom officials.
Career
Qualifications
To become an inquisitor, a member of the Church had to demonstrate intelligence, critical thinking, reasoning skills, and close combat. It is also rumored that they needed to covert skills.
Payment & Reimbursement
Accomplished inquisitors are said to have been well compensated for their work.
Since the accusations levied at them, though, such rumored wealth has been likened to earnings of a mercenary.
Other Benefits
Inquisitors were seen as high-ranking members of the Church and therefore were given access to nearly any and all things the Eternal Dawn had authority over.
Perception
Purpose
Officially, inquisitors were an investigative branch of the Church of Eternal Dawn meant to assist with dealing with corruption other matters requiring a defter hand than their Order Knights could administer.
Social Status
At their peak, inquisitors were well respected members of the Church and broader community.
Following the accusation towards them and their resultant abolishment, inquisitors have fallen greatly from the favor they once had. Former inquisitors who were welcomed by a town upon arrival found themselves being shunned by those same people. Time has only seemed to have deepened their decent as tales of inquisitors are told as what amounts to propaganda against the Church and its work.
History
The inquisitors were originally started soon after the establishment of the Holy Order Knights in response to the growing scale of the kingdom. They quickly became the brain to the knights' brawn, providing investigative skills and resources where brute strength did not apply.
During early diplomatic ventures with neighboring Beastkin tribes, inquisitors would sometimes accompany the expedition to lend aid in talks.
These diplomatic journeys are where the first accusations came from. Envoys from beastkin tribes accused missionaries of being inquisitors in disguise, claiming to have found them sending secret messages back the Church. Initially, these were dismissed as paranoia due to lack of evidence supporting the claims against the Church and its missionaries.
This attitude quickly turned when local governors and even regional lords found evidence of similar messages being sent from their domains by local inquisitors. Once decoded, the messages proved to be detailed accounts of local goings on, including personal details about the activities of ranking officials.
Despite the destination of these letters remaining undetermined, the Church was eventually forced to abolish the inquisition amidst the scandal.
Some former inquisitors were able to find positions within the local constabulary, plying their skills for similar purposes outside of the Church. Others simply transition into more traditional roles of clergy. Those unable to do either hid their former profession, some going so far as to leave the Church altogether.
