Edmund's Cathedral

The home of the Eternal Dawn's holy order, Edmund's Cathedral is said to mark the site where Edmund the Wise first began his work rebuilding society during the Age of Dusk.

Purpose / Function

If the royal palace symbolizes the kingdom Edmund helped to establish, then the cathedral embodies the ideal that laid the nation's foundations. To that end, it functions as a house of congregation, academics, and civil organization.   Followers of the Eternal Dawn gather at the cathedral to pay homage to Edmund's legacy and strive to embody the ideals and virtues he emphasized while ending the Age of Dusk. Scholarly followers have taken to academics as an avenue of faith, gaining and archiving knowledge for future generations should a calamity similar to the Dusk ever return to the land. For those seeking more traditional ways of helping the Church and their communities, many philanthropic efforts are organized and managed from within its stone walls.

Alterations

Over time and as Meriden has become better protected from outside threats, the cathedral has shifted away from its more pragmatic aesthetics. Windows that are rumored to have been arrow slits now stand filled with panels of stained glass.

Defenses

Historical texts imply that the cathedral was meant, in part, to act as shelter in the eventuality of an attack during the early years of the city when Meriden was not as well fortified as it is today.    While there is no record of the cathedral being used as such in times of siege, it is said to have been a sanctuary during the great fire that engulfed the capital in 934 AD. Over hundred and fifty citizens are estimated to have survived the blaze thanks to the cathedral's stone walls.

History

According to historical accounts, the cathedral is built on the same land as chapel and town hall used when Edmund first settled the area as a base for his agricultural operations. While the original chapel has long since been lost to time, a replica has been built of it on the eastern lawn.
