The Order of the Chroniclers

Worshipers of Primus are fairly commonplace across the realms. It turns out the thing most people crave is predictability, so the Primeval force of order is a pretty appealing figure. Also as one might expect, the dragon-god of order has a well organized structure of clergymen. The Order of the Chroniclers serve as scribes and lawyers in most major population centers. They help their local lords and citizenry interpret the laws of their land in an even and impartial manner. But the most important duty of the Chroniclers is to keep and add to The Record. In the aggregate, The Record seeks to document as much of the history as possible. Record Halls exist in major cities where stories are gathered and cataloged, while Chroniclers further afield keep their own personal journals of events, called “The Record according to” and then their own name. When conflicting stories are told, Chroniclers hold the sacred duty of investigating until they find the truth. The Chroniclers are led by the head of their order, the aptly named Record Keeper. The Record Keeper traditionally resides at the true home of the Chroniclers: The Sands of Time, also somewhat mockingly called “The Library at the End of the World.” Sitting at the edge of the Shifting Sands desert, the Library is ideally situated in perpetually dry air far from any conflict that might damage its collections. The Chroniclers typically do not keep secrets, knowledge belongs to everyone, but some knowledge becomes exceedingly dangerous in everyone’s, or just the wrong person’s hands. Thus the most sensitive information is transported to the Sands for safe keeping. Like each of their libraries scattered about the world, the rules for entry are simple: one must offer some new piece of information to be added to the collection, and while you may read freely while inside, you may not remove any of the tomes from the premises. Thus the number of books on the shelves is ever growing, the Record becoming more complete. If and when Primus brings about the end of time, the sum total of The Record will be assembled and presented to the Lord of Time by their Record Keeper. What Lord Primus might choose to do with it after that is a mystery.   “Men die and their words fade into the wind, but The Record remembers their stories.” -The Record according to Keeper Tomas.
