Those Who Stare Into the Depths
Worship can be an act of admiration and respect, but in equal measure it can be a practice of fear. Those Who Stare Into the Depths, “Deep Seers” or just “Seers” for short, typically hold no love for Leviathan. They study the waves, tides, and storms looking for signs of its presence, but not to seek out its power or majesty. No, they do so that they might sail the other way as quickly as possible. Seers commonly find employment on trading vessels seeking to utilize their skills to find safe passage to their destination. However staring into the void too deep and for too long can erode a person’s sanity. It is far from uncommon for a Seer to reach their breaking point and begin to see signs that perhaps are not truly there. When the paranoia called “Depth Dread” sets in, the Seer’s behavior can become erratic and even self destructive. Worst of all is when they fully turn and chase Leviathan’s presence. The thought is they cannot live with the fear any longer, wanting instead to face the object of their fear and let it be done with. Stories are told of broken Seers laughing insanely as their ship was broken in twain by a sea serpent or dragged under by a kraken. The release of facing their fears being welcome after years, perhaps decades of dread.
