Dragon Riders
The rarity of Dragons in the world has kept them a mystery to large parts of the population. Dragon Riders themselves maintain much of that mystery, leading to this profession.
Although each faction treats it's Dragon Riders according to it's traditions and culture, many facets of the profession cross factional borders.
Riders are typically trained from a very young age, first serving as ground crew for other Riders. Once an egg is available, prospective Riders are presented to be paired. The egg and the selected Rider experience a connection that few Riders can adequately describe to non-Riders.
Once the bond is established, the newly minted Rider prepares the egg for the hatching process, typically assisted by a brood master. As the egg reaches it's hatching window, the Rider is typically with the egg around the clock to ensure they are the first person the hatchling sees. This process helps to cement the bond formed during the selection process.
For the first few months of the Dragon's life, the Rider provides for all of it's needs. As the Dragon begins to grow, generally a quick process, the Rider begins to work with various training officers to ensure that the Dragon is prepared for it's role in the Service.
A Dragon's role, and therefore a Rider's role, is typically determined by the breed of the Dragon and it's breeding line.
Equipment
Some equipment and gear varies based on the specific breed of Dragon, but most Dragon Riders are issued the following:- Harness - Used to attach the Rider to their Dragon. Typically constructed of Leather strapping with padding and metal fittings depending on the breed and age of the Dragon.
- Uniform - Military uniform denoting rank and profession. Most services modify an existing uniform for other branches of their forces. Most Dragon Rider uniforms include some overcoat in leather or heavy material to help with cold and wind tolerance when flying.
- Firearms - As members of the military, all Dragon Riders are issued firearms, though the specific complement will be based on the Rider's role in the service.
