A brief history of the world.
The almighty Creator set into place the realm of Dragonforged. He gave the gods dominion over the world. The small humanoid races of this planet gather at the center of the continent and begin to build a great city known as Glasgow.
During this time of growth and prosperity, the various races spread out across the world of Dragonforged as the populations grew. Knowing they would need guidance and wanting to help his creation, the Creator planted Treants across the land. The Treants were wise and kind tree spirits sent to help guide the others as they grew.
After centuries of peace, there began to grow an imbalance in the universe. The gods of law and good thrived during this time. Evil and chaos were hardly a forethought and were kept at bay. But the law risked becoming overbearing and good became prideful. To restore the balance, the Watcher opened gates to the Outer Planes allowing free travel among them. Soon visitors became invaders and conflict became war. Evil ran free and chaos reigned.
The wars inevitably spilled over onto the Material Plane. In order to protect themselves, the Treants became secluded and many of them went dormant leaving the humanoid races to fend for themselves. But along with the Outer Planes, rifts were opened to the Elemental Planes as well. Dragons entered the Material Plane for the first time in an event known as the Great Incursion. A great sundering of the veil between worlds tore open in the northern icelands and other areas of Dragonforged. Dragons of all kinds poured onto the lands as well as other strange and abominable creatures.
But the rifts soon became unstable and were sealed forever in an earth-shaking explosion of arcane power. It is said that this explosion is what created the Weave and brought magic to the Material Plane...and sealed the fate of dragons as now permanent denizens. There is still a strong draw to those areas for magic users who wish to commune with the raw elemental powers and magic becomes more powerful when one is near.
A large rift had opened between the Plane of Air and the Plane of Water during this time of chaos and it sent the world plunging into an ice age. The Material Plane was blanketed in snow and ice. Winter lasted the majority of the year. Food was scarce and many civilizations did not last. It got worse with each passing year and it lasted nearly a decade.
The dragons were the most feared and the most respected creatures on their new home of the Material Plane. Some of them were benevolent rulers adopting a new purpose to help the humanoids rebuild. They shared the knowledge of the arcane and taught them how to use magic. But other dragons were not happy with their current circumstances. They felt trapped on this world and resented the humanoid pestilence. They ruled through fear and destruction.
The Ice Age was finally ended by the dragons with the help of the Watcher who opened a small rift to the Plane of Fire. Combined with the arcane power of the dragons, it was enough to melt the ice barrier allowing them to seal the rifts.
Eventually the world recovered from the Ice Age and populations grew once again as land became farmable. After many centuries, the humanoids grew in knowledge and courage as well as number. They sought to be out from under the rule of the dragons and make this world their own once again. During this time, there was a great Council of Dragons that was called together to decide the fate of their subjects. The meeting included Bahamut a metallic dragon, Tiamat a chromatic dragon, King Morgog of the western Orc tribes, and Franklin Wallace a representative of the humans. Through the course of heated discussions, it was revealed that some of the chromatic dragons had been allied with the orc tribes. The dragons promised them more land and power in exchange for the service of the orcs in pillaging and oppressing the other people groups. King Morgog was furious because Tiamat had not kept up her end of the deal. Bahamut was outraged at the blatant disregard of the chromatic dragons for the lives of their subjects. The council ended in threats and a wedge was forever driven between the chromatic and metallic dragons.
During this time of upheaval, there was also a meeting of Bahamut and other metallic dragons with representatives of the Treants. Taintedthorn, Wiseroot, and Acornleaf were representatives of the few remaining Treants on Dragonforged. They had seen the threat of war before and it did not turn out well for them. They asked the metallic dragons for help. Both of them desired to help the humanoid races and agreed that the chromatic dragons and orcs threated the hope of a peaceful world. A tentative agreement was set between the metallic dragons and the Treants, but each knew that war was on the horizon.
The Great Orc Invasion began on the western coast of Dragonforged. Armies of orcs and other creatures rallied to their side cut a wide swath of destruction across the land. They leveled entire cities and turned villages into piles of rubble. Their empire expanded towards the center of the continent leaving death and destruction behind them.
The threat of orcs spreading across the land was the beginning of the great war. Once again, the Watcher stepped in to nudge the balance. He recruited persuasive agents to stir up the humans, elves, and dwarves to go to war against the orcs. Dragons were found on both sides of battle. Many chromatic dragons sided with the orcs while the metallic dragons aided the other races. The humans and elves fought back with all their might; however, the dwarves of Dragonforged were more reluctant to join the fight. Many dwarven clans barricaded themselves in their mountain keeps and protected their people. There are stories of a great battle in the Earthsunder mountains where thousands of elves lost their lives because the dwarves refused to come to their aid. This has forever driven a wedge between the elves and dwarves of Dragonforged.
In the years that comprised the war, many great forests were laid to waste by a dragon's breath. And many more trees were chopped down to build weapons and siege machines. Caught in the fray once again, this time the Treants disappeared from the land once and for all. The few that had remained went dormant without any indication that they would ever return.
Eventually, war ceased. The orcs were driven back. The evil chromatic dragons went into hiding. The humans and elves and dwarves prevailed with the help of the good metallic dragons. But no one escapes the casualty of war. The dragons numbers were severely diminished. Their rule over the land had come to an end. The humanoids would spread out and claim the world of Dragonforged for their own.
What war can destroy in a day takes years to rebuild. Dragonforged enjoyed an age of peace for many centuries during which time the humans and elves and dwarves rebuilt their great civilizations. Other races established themselves all across the land and life was good for the most part.
It was during this time that a humble peasant human named Frederick Bauer was approached by the Watcher. He imbued Frederick with the knowledge and initiative to begin rebuilding the great city of Glasgow. What was once a shining beacon of cooperation and ingenuity in the center of Dragonforged had been lost to war and time. He rallied the people to begin construction and convinced them that it would unify the world once again.
The human race cried for a king. In his later years with construction of Glasgow well under way (it would take generations to complete), the Watcher was willing to let Frederick become ruler. Frederick was reluctant to accept but did so with the encouragement of his wife Desiray. His son, Titus, however, was anxious to have the power for himself and eventually assassinated his aging father to usurp the throne.
There are stories of a secret order of druids that once tried to resummon the ancient Treant spirits. But their ritual was tainted by interlopers with evil intentions. As punishment, the god of nature cursed them and all druids for a hundred generations.
Things have continued mostly as they were in the time of peace. Kings and kingdoms have come and gone. The mighty dragons that once ruled the world have relinquished their authority and the gods still oversee all of creation. That is where we find the world today - ever teetering on the edge of balance. The Watcher has not been heard from in quite some time. Will the world maintain its course, or will something or someone come along to upset the balance?
A group of adventurers known as the Federation of Happenstance (F.O.H.) set off on an expedition to the farthest northern tip of Dragonforged. Claiming divine guidance from a mysterious being, they discover a planar rift guarded by a supernatural white dragon. Left unchecked, the rift would continue to grow and tear the physical world apart. But thanks to the brave actions of Eldur, Po, Despair, Lil Bubs, and Captain Bernie...the dragon was defeated, the rift closed, and the world was safe once more.
In an unprecedented occurrence, a remote and unpopulated area in central Dragonforged was suddenly reclaimed by an ancient settlement known as Barovia. The settlement, which spans a wide valley, reappeared as if from nowhere. After first contact, the residents claim that their land had been trapped in another realm by dangerous "mists" controlled by a powerful dark lord known as Strahd Von Zarovich.
