Úrg Trees

Znagrúkic: Úrg

Úrg trees1 are native to river valleys throughout the southern, western and eastern Múlíat Mountains and southwestern Tærp Mountains in southern Dragonía. Several different peoples in the mountains cultivate the trees for their fruits, seeds and arils; the reptilian Exíans in Lássordikía were the first to do so, though the varieties used by the other inhabitants originate among the avian Kúxes in eastern Darlaa, who learned to cultivate the trees independently and still remain one of their main source of food.
Later on, Hyrríans in Hrax to the south adopted this practice through trading with the Kúxes, who eventually taught it to Znagrúks, the dominant people in the region. As a result, úrg tree groves are now a common sight throughout the Znagrúk Empire.
Exíans usually eat úrg fruits fresh or dried, as do Kúxes, who also roast the fruits or add them into stews during festivals. Hyrríans traditionally dry both fruit and aril and grind them into a meal to thicken soups and flavour porridge, though many now use Hurhe meal instead. While used to some extent by all these groups, only the Znagrúks cultivate úrg trees primarily for the seeds, as most find the fruits unappetizing; the seeds are ground into a powder which is used as kind of spice that gives a fizzy sensation similar to a carbonated drink.
