Known Drugs of the Mortal Realm
The denizens of the Mortal Realm have both discovered and created a number of different substances with notable mind altering effects when consumed through varying methods. These substances have wide ranging effects on the mortal body, both physically and mentally. Some advocate for their usage in certain doses, saying that they can even assist with healing processes or bolstering mental health. The following substances are known to either be the most common or the most potent substances consumed by mortals on a wide spread scale. Each city-state has taken a different approach to these substances ranging from little or no regulation to outright sweeping criminalization.
Smokeleaf
Also known as "Leaf", Smokeleaf is a psychoactive drug named after the Smokeleaf plant it is harvested from. Smokeleaf is consumed primarily through smoking the leaves or extract refined from the leaves. Consumption of Smokeleaf can lead to various mental or physical effects, including: altered states of mind, altered sense of time, difficulty concentrating, impaired short-term memory, impaired body movement, loss of fine motor control, relaxation and an increase in thirst. Higher doses have been known to cause anxiety, hallucinations, paranoia, psychosis and greying skin. Effects can be felt within minutes to half an hour depending on the method of consumption and dosage. The effects on average last from two to four hours. Long term effects of the drug have been cited as a possibility for any of the short term effects to become more permanent, but have been noted to require repeated long term usage in high doses for this to become a risk. Overdoses are rare and very difficult to achieve, but are possible. Symptoms include extremely heavy, violent and persistent coughing and an elevated, desperate like desire for anything to drink. Overdoses can lead to respiratory failure and death without medical treatment.Nesh
Also known as "Powder", Nesh is a nerve stimulant drug harvested as an extract from Gray Root plants. Nesh is extracted and processed into a grayish powder that is then consumed through snorting, smoking or injection. Consumption of Nesh can cause a variety of mental and physical effects. Nesh has been known to cause intense feelings of happiness or euphoria, dissociation from reality, slows one's perception of time, agitation or reckless confidence. Physically, it increases the heart rate, dilates pupils, causes hyperactivity and can overstimulate muscles and nerves, granting increased reflexes and agility. Higher doses amplify these effects and can greatly overtax the body, leading to various health complications and/or failures. The effects are generally felt within a minute. They can last as little as five minutes and upwards of an hour. Long term usage of the drug increases tolerance and forms addiction much more quickly than other known substances. Prolonged and repeated use often leads to chronic chest pain and extreme weight loss due to the heightened burn of the body's energy. Long term mental effects include constant states of dissociation from reality and hallucinations. Overdoses become fairly common in long term addicts and is only mildly difficult to achieve in newer users due to its harsh physical effects on the body. Symptoms of an overdose include bleeding from the nose, ears or eyes as well as coughing up blood. Unless quickly acted upon, the victim will suffer cardiac arrest and the heart may even explode.Bloom Shroom
Commonly also known simply as "Shrooms", Bloom Shroom is a type of purple fungi that contains special chemicals that turn it into a psychedelic drug upon ingestion. Bloom Shroom is only consumed through ingestion of the fungus for its psychedelic effects as any other form of consumption has failed to produce any effects. Consumption of Bloom Shroom can cause significant mental effects and minor physical reactions. Bloom Shrooms can cause significant changes to the auditory, visual and tactile senses, enhancement of perception of colors and hallucinations. Physical reactions can include nausea, vomiting and drowsiness. Higher doses often prolong the effect and can increase the intensity of the mental effects. Increases in physical reactions can also occur, but generally require much higher doses than needed to elevate the mental effects. Effects from Bloom Shrooms can be felt around 30 minutes after consumption and last last up to eight hours. There are very few known long term effects associated with the drug as it rarely forms addictions. Extreme cases have been recorded from heavy repeated use that causes the user to begin growing fungal like growths along the arms and legs. These growths can be reversed with proper medical treatment, but will continue to grow back if simply attempted to be removed through physical means. Overdoses are also rare and require very heavy ingestion of the fungi, but have been recorded. Symptoms include worsening vivid hallucinations that induce a psychosis like state in the user. Overdoses from Bloom Shrooms have never been recorded to be directly lethal to the user, but the psychosis state the users enter can greatly jeopardize their safety with the new erratic behavior and has lead to the death of the user and others around them.Koran (Kor-en)
Koran is a pale red crystalline synthetic nerve stimulant created from a process of refining chemicals into a solid form. Koran is primarily smoked, but is also injected to maximize absorption of its narcotic effects. Koran consumption has very potent physical and psychological effects on the user. Lower doses instill feelings of alertness, euphoria, concentration and energy. In higher doses, users feel heightened senses of aggression, larger bursts of energy and the overstimulation to muscle groups cause a significant increase in strength. The effects of Koran are often felt within minutes if smoked, but the effects from injection are sometimes felt within seconds. The effects last from three to four hours on average. Chronic usage of the drug increases tolerance and makes it highly addictive. Prolonged usage of Koran can lead to muscle and skeletal atrophy, seizures, psychosis and permanent alterations to brain chemistry resulting in permanent violent behavior. Overdoses are relatively common compared to most other drugs as it is the easiest to attain in short term use. Overdose symptoms include rapid breathing, abnormal heart rythym, over-responsive reflexes, stereotypy or vomiting blood. Victims who suffer from an overdose require immediate medical treatment or odds of survival are extremely low, brain damage in overdose survivors is common.Tallin (Tal-in)
Tallin, also known as "Snow", is a pure white powder created by a chemical refinement of extract from the leaves of the Tallus plant. The primary method of consumption for Tallin is snorting or smoking it for a reduced effect. Tallin causes a myriad of effects including: respiratory and cardiovascular depression, relaxation, drowsiness, altered perception of time, loss of motor control, impaired memory, and altered state of mind. The effects can take up to an hour to be felt and last up to eight hours, depending on the dosage. Chronic usage of the drug has revealed some addiction forming qualities. Chronic usage can lead to permanently damaged memory and decrease in energy. Tolerance for the drug has been measured to build fairly slowly over time and overdoses are relatively difficult to achieve. An overdose of Tallin requires copious amounts to be consumed that is typically at such a level it would require intent to overdose as it is far above any amount necessary to just receive a high unless the person has achieved such a high tolerance from a lifetime of usage. Overdoses are characterized by a death-like catatonic state that can last for days at a time. During this state, the breathing and heart rate have been reduced to such a slight degree that it is difficult to detect for any non medical expert. An overdose has never directly lead to the death of the user, so if it is known that the victim had been consuming large amounts of Tallin, death is often quickly ruled out. Death have indirectly resulted from overdoses however when others mistook the victim for having actually died and disposed of the body. Others have died due to others leaving the body unattended due to thinking the victim was actually dead and not providing the necessary care such as hydration. It is not uncommon for users who awaken from the coma to be suffering from memory loss of the week prior leading up to the event.Shuma (Shoo-muh)
Shuma is an extremely potent opioid that is the result of mixing extracts from the Shunga Root and the seeds of the Rema plant. The resulting mixture is a light blue liquid with a slightly higher viscosity than water. Shuma is primarily injected, but can also be ingested orally for reduced effects. The effects of Shuma include: drowsiness, impaired mental functions, respiratory and cardiovascular depression, pain relief, muscular weakness and extreme euphoria. It generally only takes seconds for the effects to be felt and can last up to several hours. Long term usage of Shuma can cause permanent damage to mental functions, leading to permanent damage to decision-making abilities, the ability to regulate behavior and hamper higher cognitive processing. Shuma is extremely addictive and addiction is seen as an inevitability in long-term consumption. This is coupled with the fact that it very quickly builds tolerance, creating a drastic escalation in the amounts necessary to be used to reach a high. This has resulted in overdoses becoming very common in chronic users. Victims of a Shuma overdose are characterized by a cessation of respiratory and cardiovascular functions. This is not precipitated by any violent and sudden reactions to the substance as it already slows these functions drastically. This makes it hard for others to notice an overdose in others before it is too late to retrieve medical attention.Razef (Rah-zef)
Razef, also known as "Tabs" is a synthetic psychedelic drug created from a chemical refinement process that produces a brownish thin wafer. Razef is almost strictly ingested orally due to its form making any other form of consumption impractical. The effects are generally felt within 30 minutes of ingestion and have been known to last up to an entire day. Consumption of Razef causes suppression in appetite, profuse sweating and mental, visual and auditory hallucinations. The ultimate effects of the drug are determined by the mental experience caused, often referred to as a "trip". The ensuing "trip" can be influenced by mental, psychological, emotional and environmental factors. A "good trip" has been reported to include stimulating sensations, heightened senses of happiness, euphoria, reduced anxiety and a sense of spiritual connectivity. A "bad trip" reports sensations of fear, increased anxiety, paranoia, dread, suicidal ideation, and an extremely elevated sense of aggressiveness and violence. Prolonged usage of the drug rapidly increases tolerance and forces the user to resort to higher doses. Despite this, all studies of the substance have found low risks of addiction forming in its users. Overdoses are also entirely unheard of or unreported. The greatest danger from the substance is posed in the form of "bad trips" wherein the user lashes out in violence against others or themselves and the ensuing conflicts result in death.Name | Time for high to be felt | Duration of high | Risk of addiction | Notable effects of high | Mechanical effects |

Widow's Kiss
Widow's Kiss, also known as Spider Juice, is an alchemical concoction sold in the Reg'naat drug market but extremely difficult to find elsewhere. The components and process used to create the substance is known only to a small handful of drow ethno-syndicates, most prominent of which are the Daughters of Dusk and the Silken Triad. The elixir itself is characterized by a deep and vibrant green liquid. Retaining consistency very similar to water, it gives off a strange and pungent odor. Unlike other prominent drugs on the market, there is no recreational use associated with this substance and it provides no type of high. This substance is almost entirely used for its performance enhancing effects, causing those who drink the concoction to gain an increase in speed, reflexes, perceptive abilities and even the ability to easily climb or scale vertical surfaces. Widow's Kiss is highly addictive however and causes side effects similar to an overdose or chronic drug abuse. These similarities have caused it to be classified as a narcotic and falls under the same regulatory restrictions as other narcotic substances. Consumption in large quantities in a narrow time frame cause an "overdose" in the user, resulting in sudden and violent mutations. Mutations are generally classified as the user taking on spider-like features such as growing additional eyes and the warping of their current ones to resemble a spider's, spider like appendages beggining to form from their back or limbs and even secretion of a web like substance from their mouth. These mutations also occur over time in long time chronic users of Widow's Kiss but the manifestaion taking place in a less violent and sudden manner.
