The 4th Ward
There are whispers on the streets of Carmenthia about strange noises from below - drifting up through sewer drains and grates - or shadowy specters or odd oozes that seem to appear out of thin air. Although dismissed as superstitions or side effects of the lack of sleep by most of the medical staff and students at St. Carmen's, these odd sights and sounds reflect the hidden, nocturnal activities of the 4th Ward. Winding beneath St. Carmen's is a "hidden" labyrinth of sewer tunnels and it is here that the underbelly of Carmenthia resides. Amidst the dim teal light and dank smell of the underground, various individuals - perhaps unsavory - meet to perform less than ethical experiments, explore new poisonous concoctions, and explore all facets of Carmenthia that were supposedly expelled from the island long ago.
Entry Points into the 4th Ward
There are various entry points into the 4th Ward. The currently known entrances are below:
- The Fountain of St. Carmen's - there is a trap door hidden at the bottom of the fountain of St. Carmen's. Some of the new medical interns claimed to hear odd gurgling noises and one claimed to see an ooze.
- The Black & White Lounge – a "shady" individual with hood drawn up seems to regularly leave the back of the bar to go to his job as the night shift scribe. There is a trap door in the storage room.
Descending into the depths, the 4th Ward is built from old volcanic tunnels that have since cooled and solidified. Some carving is evidence and, despite merging with the sewers in many places... it is almost surgically clean. The halls are lined with teal torchlights, mounted to the walls sparingly.
Foul Carmen's
A large cavern has been converted into an underground town with gentle flowing streams of warm water - heated by the volcanic activity lurking distantly below. Although the structures are somewhat shoddy, they are all stable with solid walls, painted decor, and even some moss gardens. As there is no sun, the buildings seem to "grow" on top of one another. Who needs a roof? It is an amalgamation of growing buildings that sprawl across much of the cavern.
In the center of the cavern, a bazaar of sort seems to exist. People mill about perusing wares, chatting, and bickering - just like the world above - amidst the dim teal light of lanterns rather than the blazing sun.
4th Ward Leaders
- Maritza "Mary" Alvarro –The spokesperson for the 4th Ward. She manages the day-to-day affairs of Foul Carmen's. She also seems to be working with Dr. Corvinus as she finds the current top-side situation worthwhile enough to swallow her pride. However, she seems to have a personal investment in "The Purifying Ward", though the other leaders have refused to help her with the matter.
- Tim-Tam – He seems to have an interest in poisons, owning a shop in the bazaar and workshop space.
- "V" – Also known as the "Ooze Whisperer", he's responsible for the "cleaning crew" of the 4th Ward
The Purifying Ward
Although the 4th Ward is known for considering ethics as more of a suggestion than a strict set of rules to abide by, there was a ward within it that was deemed so unsavory, grotesque, and horrid that the 4th Ward rallied to exterminate it. According to Mary, the Purifying Ward was the site of horrible human experimentation and the doctors that oversaw these experiments sought to purge all humanoids of their imperfections. The 4th Ward sent a team to eradicate them before they sealed the entrance. Perhaps there is something behind the sealed doors... but no one else in the 4th Ward dares venture there. Mary, however, seems to have a personal vestment in uncovering what may lie beyond...
