The Talos Incident

It came from beyond the edges of the galaxy, somewhere far beyond the reach of even the fastest FTL ships. Talos, an incomparable destroyer, laying waste to everything the Precursors had built. Using their own data networks against them, it spread, devastating whole ships, colonies, and even worlds.
A last stand by the Precursor Guardians finally brought an end to the onslaught, in a catastrophic event known as the Flood of Al-Rem - itself the creation of the dark fluidic space now better known as The Deep. 
Whatever Talos had been, it was reduced to a positronic brain, a titanic CPU of astounding complexity. The so-called Talos Device would serve as the basis of Automata minds, even up to the present day.
The whereabouts of the Talos Device are currently unknown.
