Day 1 of...?

There are very few things I have now, and I am struggling to fully embrace that they may be all I see for some time. That I may, in fact, not see home for some time. The Star Strider came under attack by a force that, if they were not Cryphans-- vampires-- themselves, were in fact in service to them. The craft's maiden voyage was prevented from otherwise being a success owing to sabotage intended on capturing the royal forces of many countries that were aboard the vessel, myself chief among them. When we evacuated with the rest of the passengers and crew, specifically our pod was sabotaged, and a single Cryphan coin was found within the console. It served as a homing beacon by which the Cryphans attempted to lock onto our vessel and pull it to them.   An advanced automaton who could have been the Strider's pilot worked to safely navigate us, and I set to work restoring control to the craft. I was able to get us back to power, and we carefully opened the escape pod's hatch to throw free the coin before trying to steer free of control and get us out of the country.   In this endeavor, we were only partly successful. We landed near the border, safely, but now we have resolved that going there immediately would be to damn us to an attack we might not escape from or survive.   I am struggling with this decision, even if it is sound. I am struggling with the thought of being stuck in this hellscape for an extended period of time, with only the clothes on my back and the few items Edward gathered from my quarters. I have changes of clothes which don't even suit our environs, this paper and writing set, some soap, a few assorted items, and my portable wafflemaker I brought on the trip out of fear the breakfast offerings might not be to my liking.   I could laugh at my foresight, and how right I would end up being, if under entirely unanticipated circumstances.   It is worse here than I could have even imagined. The conditions these people live under, unsupported by their rulers, is despicable. There is no electricity, not by steam or magic or any other innovation. That is only the first observation, and I am running low on paper to note others.   May we all see home again soon.
