Pogreban Tower

As with the settlements throughout the western valley, tradition dictates that the deceased be cremated. Rather than storing the ashes in columbariums, Zankytes have the option to have their remains fused into a brick, which is then added to the top of the memorial tower. The deceased are thanked for choosing to further elevate the city during their lives and even unto death. Those who wish to have their remains kept alongside a loved one can have the mortaring ceremony withheld until such as time as they can be conducted together. Only non-locals tend to abstain from undergoing this funeral ritual.   The ceremony consists of a funeral procession from the deceased's residence to the tower, with their brick carried to the chest -arms crossed with the opposite hand on either end- by a loved one or passed between several people close to them along the route. The path may not be the shortest possible; the deceased may request that it proceed through their favorite areas of the city. Additionally, a Steward or other person designated in the will may give a speech about the person's life once the procession reaches the base of the tower. The final carrier will then ascend the staircase within accompanied by the official Bricklayer, who will mortar the brick into its final resting place. Regardless of how many need to be done in a given day, the Ascent will be done individually for each person's brick.   The tower is located just outside of the Capitol Keep.
