In a corner of the Forbidden Library sat an old man bent over a desk. Beams of sunlight fell through windows high up in the walls, while his pen moved over the yellowish paper of the journal he was writing in. Ink had stained his white beard here and there. Yet the man did not seem to notice. Even at the sound of a door opening, he did not look up. He knew only one person could find him here. He heard Her quietly closing the door.
"What are you writing about?" She asked, breaking the silence.
A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "I'm writing about us. All of us."
"Is that wise?" She moved towards him, taking place on a chair next to his desk.
"Perhaps not. But who will ever read it but me?" He smiled at her, even though she could not see.
"Still. I don't understand, why you have to spend so much time locked up in here, all by yourself."
He carefully cleaned the tip of his fountain pen and placed it in its holder. "I feel old, Mizymi. What else is there for me to do but to revisit the past?"
She stood up, a smile on her face, and bend over to kiss him on the forehead. "You
are old, father. That does not mean you can no longer enjoy your life. Join me for dinner later. Our new orphans will be there. You could tell them wonderful tales. Make them forget for a moment what they lost. I think you would enjoy that, and so would they."
He put his hand over hers. "Do you ever resent me for what I gifted you?" Her hand squeezed his shoulder gently.
She shook her head, looking shocked. "Why would I ever resent you for that? You gifted me life. You gifted me eternity. I will always be grateful for that."
He smiled ruefully. "Let's hope you'll never change your mind then, shall we? Now, I need to get back to work. I promise I'll be there for dinner."
With a last kiss on his forehead, she turned around and left the room. Sometimes her strength and willpower surprised him. As the
Oracle of Sajhdula she was responsible for millions of humans. Yet in all her life, she had never turned her back on them. No matter how badly they had treated her in the past.
Ooh, this is fascinating! I really like the Chosen Ones already, and I know very little about them. I suppose because they haven't given up on humanity, that makes me happy! Great job. :D
Thank you. :)
