The Chosen Ones

Summer Camp 2021 Article - Under Construction

In a corner of the Forbidden Library sat an old man bent over a desk. Beams of sunlight fell through windows high up in the walls, while his pen moved over the yellowish paper of the journal he was writing in. Ink had stained his white beard here and there. Yet the man did not seem to notice. Even at the sound of a door opening, he did not look up. He knew only one person could find him here. He heard Her quietly closing the door.   "What are you writing about?" She asked, breaking the silence.   A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "I'm writing about us. All of us."   "Is that wise?" She moved towards him, taking place on a chair next to his desk.   "Perhaps not. But who will ever read it but me?" He smiled at her, even though she could not see.   "Still. I don't understand, why you have to spend so much time locked up in here, all by yourself."   He carefully cleaned the tip of his fountain pen and placed it in its holder. "I feel old, Mizymi. What else is there for me to do but to revisit the past?"   She stood up, a smile on her face, and bend over to kiss him on the forehead. "You are old, father. That does not mean you can no longer enjoy your life. Join me for dinner later. Our new orphans will be there. You could tell them wonderful tales. Make them forget for a moment what they lost. I think you would enjoy that, and so would they."   He put his hand over hers. "Do you ever resent me for what I gifted you?" Her hand squeezed his shoulder gently.   She shook her head, looking shocked. "Why would I ever resent you for that? You gifted me life. You gifted me eternity. I will always be grateful for that."   He smiled ruefully. "Let's hope you'll never change your mind then, shall we? Now, I need to get back to work. I promise I'll be there for dinner."   With a last kiss on his forehead, she turned around and left the room. Sometimes her strength and willpower surprised him. As the Oracle of Sajhdula she was responsible for millions of humans. Yet in all her life, she had never turned her back on them. No matter how badly they had treated her in the past.

The choices we made

When I look at my daughter, and everything she has gone through. I sometimes wonder, was it the right choice we made? Could we have said no? Would there have been others like us? Yet when I look at humanity, and all we did to preserve them, I know it was the right choice. She does not resent me for making the choice for her. But, perhaps one day she will. When she lives as long as I have, she too may grow weary. Trapped in a plight, she can never get out off. Yet I know she is proud of her work. She is proud of her people, and all they have accomplished under her guidance. Maybe that is what I am lacking. A purpose like hers. People to call my own.
We were the perfect pets. Loyal, compliant, always by their side. That is why we were given the choice. That is how we became the Chosen Ones.

The Chosen Ones

Why do I find it so difficult to write down what we are. Perhaps there is a fear deep down inside of me that one day someone will read my journals. Someone who might reveal the truth to humanity. How would they react? Would they do the same to us as we did to the Witchmaster?
— The Librarian
The Chosen Ones are an organisation of seven immortals who were once human. A long time ago, the Creators offered six of them a reward for their fierce loyalty. They would become the Keepers of all humanity. When the Creators would go to their eternal sleep, the Chosen ones would remain to preserve that which They left behind. To perform this task, each of them was gifted immortality, plus a one of a kind gift unique to each individual that would help their group in their task. Many thousands of years later, six became seven, when one of the Chosen Ones gifted eternity to his infant daughter. In the eyes of the others, this was blasphemy. For the Gift should only be given by the Creators. And only to someone who could make the choice willingly. Though this caused friction between the members of the group for a while, with time the past was forgotten, and the girl became part of the Chosen Ones. For centuries, they have acted as directors behind the scenes. Guiding humanity, saving them from their own mistakes.

Ooh, this is fascinating! I really like the Chosen Ones already, and I know very little about them. I suppose because they haven't given up on humanity, that makes me happy! Great job. :D

Loved it, but especially the prose. Well done. Lots of emotion packed in there.

Thank you. :) I was nervous about revealing this part of my setting, but I think this was the perfect opportunity. Not everything should remain a mystery forever.

Nice... but a bit spooky, too. Just how much control do these Chosen ones have over us mortals? Now I want to know!!!

Thank you. :) They are not like puppeteers controlling every move humans make, they are more like herders, steering humanity in the right direction. Or at least the direction they think is right. They have made choices that led to disasters, and they have taken away things with the best intentions. They are in a way like gods. But gods can make mistakes too. :)
