Godzilla

Godzilla is in each one of us.
— Takehiro Murata, Professor Yuji Shinoda, "Godzilla 2000"
The King of Monsters is an alpha "massive unidentified terrestrial organism" or MUTO and emits auditory signals that bring other giant monsters that aren't alphas to heel. Reports of his height range anywhere from 50 feet to 355 feet tall, and he has been estimated to be as long as 550 feet from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Lumpy but shimmering scales cover the surface area of Godzilla's massive form, with large, bony plates cascading down his back like those of a stegosaurus. His strong fore and hind limbs terminate in rending claws powerful enough to rend all but the most durable materials. And, Godzilla's mouth is full of teeth lengths unseen in any other lifeform except King Kong. Do not overlook Godzilla's atomic fire breath when sizing up his gigantic chompers, and those plates on his back and his eyes light up before he lets his radioactive fire loose as if Godzilla is charging the attack.

History

Godzilla was an unknown reptilian organism dating from the early Permian Period laying dormant for millions of years after the chemical makeup of and radioactivity in the Earth's atmosphere changed from what could sustain him. He remained there for millions of years as the other hyper and megafauna went into hibernation or extinct. As primates evolved into early hominids, some of those hominids were made into Eternals and Deviants by the celestials, then later evolved into homo sapiens who were also made into Inhomo supremis and began to evolve into homo superior. Empires rose and fell while Godzilla slumbered until humanity entered the atomic age.

Cold War Era

The "George" shot of Operation Greenhouse aimed at the Enewetak Atoll was the first successful, if uncontrolled, thermonuclear explosion in the development of a fusion bomb. That explosion was much more powerful than scientists were expecting and ended up infecting several men on a Japanese fishing boat with radiation sickness. It also awakened Godzilla from some unknown place beneath the ocean. While there wasn't enough radiation on the surface to sustain him yet, he tracked radiation sources in the ocean. Namely, American and Soviet nuclear submarines. These attacks heightened tensions between the early Cold War powers threatening global devastation and fueling the arms race toward larger and larger weapons that further attracted Godzilla. Survivors and civilian vessels eventually provided intelligence on Godzilla's existence, which initiated responses from the United States and Japan in the form of Monarch, and the Soviet organization Leviathan started a similar initiative.

When the Eisenhower administration began the new president was focused on easing tensions with the Soviets and avoiding nuclear disaster, while Godzilla's attacks seemed to work against his agenda. A little over a year in office the order came down from the Pentagon to lure the alpha monster to the Bikini Atoll and kill it with thermonuclear weapons. This strike was coordinated with the Soviet Union under Krushchev so that they knew that the detonations were coming but that the rhetoric that would result would disguise the operation as a top-secret nuclear test. When Godzilla came ashore on the islands, the U.S. Air Force struck Godzilla repeatedly until no trace of him was seen. The devastation was so great that there was no evidence to suggest that Godzilla returned to the sea, and it was reported that he was likely vaporized in the bombardment.

Whether the Godzilla that came ashore on Oda Island during the typhoon, only caused more destruction to the village in the storm's path. The Japanese State Defense Force attacked the king of monsters as he slipped back into the sea. They then attacked Godzilla with depth charges but the explosives had little effect and Godzilla swam to Tokyo Bay. The JSDF did all they could to repell Godzilla's attacks on Tokyo but nothing seemed to blunt the king of monster's aggressions. Monarch quickly developed the Oxygen Destroyer, an experimental chemical weapon that would make the oxygen in the air impossible to absorb, and hoped it would suffocate Godzilla. They hit him with it off the coast and it appeared to work as a limp carcass is washed back to sea. Because Godzilla attacked Tokyo, Eisenhower ordered a special branch of his newly formed agency, S.H.I.E.L.D. to create the Godzilla division to study these prehistoric hyperfauna and learn how to defend American cities from them.

For more than 2 decades Godzilla was in the cold waters near Alaska, soaking up ambient radiation from volcanoes in the Andreanof and Aleutian islands to recover from the Oxygen Destroyer. He was awoken from under the sea when he heard the mating call of a parasitic species of MUTO and broke free from the ice to head to Honolulu. The male parasite making the call descended on the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport where it attacked travelers to build up the calories it needed to continue its journey across the Pacific. In the middle of that attack, Godzilla emerged from the Ocean. The 2 giant monsters battled through the airport until the male parasite escaped and flew away toward the continental United States. Godzilla turned and followed it, diving back into the water and swam after it. Monarch and the Navy followed Godzilla in the ocean as S.H.I.E.L.D. used their Behomoth helicarrier to follow the female parasitic MUTO and divert it from populated areas like Las Vegas with its weaponry.

Monarch director Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, son of founder Eiji Serizawa, tried to convince the American government, now under the Carter administration, to adopt a policy of nonintervention with Godzilla's hunt for the parasites. It was determined that he was too much of a threat. Every attempt only brought about more destruction to infrastructure, though it diverted the monsters away from Seattle and Portland on the East Coast. When the military was out of ideas, Serizawa and Godzilla Squad leader, Dum Dum Dugan realized that the monsters were converging on San Fransokyo. S.H.I.E.L.D. and Monarch investigators descended into the city on the bay to find out why they were being drawn there when they discovered Doctor Demonicus, a mad scientist with a radioactive meteor that he used to awaken the parasitic MUTOs. When the human agents believed Demonicus was cornered, the male parasite descended on the scientist and stole the radioactive meteor. Carter refused to use nuclear weapons on American soil, so Godzilla was freed to battle the parasites. He defeated them and burned out their nest. Godzilla clutched the radioactive meteor as he collapsed in Candlestick Park from his injuries and rescue operations were put underway. When the king of monsters arose and returned to the ocean, the people of San Fransokyo broke into applause. The meteor's radiation was all but absorbed in Godzilla's recovery.

Carter was a 1 term president after the attack by Godzilla and the Iranian hostage crisis, and Ronald Reagan became the President of the United States. After his reelection in 1984, Soviet nuclear submarines started disappearing in the Pacific Ocean and the Soviets believed it was American operations. It wasn't until diplomatic tensions had risen to a near crisis, that Japan informed both governments that Godzilla had returned and was attacking the submarines. The U.S. and the U.S.S.R. pulled back their forces in the Pacific to defend their waters and allies in the Ocean as the JSDF activated their experimental aerial fortress, Super-X. As if he sensed that the Japanese were preparing to attack him, Godzilla attacked the coasts of Japan where he encountered mobile laser platforms and then Super-X. Nothing seemed to phase the king of monsters until Super-X fired a final volley of cadmium artillery shells into Godzilla's open mouth and he fell unconscious. The plan was to put the prehistoric reptile in a volcano and collapse the crater and throat on top of him. Godzilla woke before the plan could be realized and topped a building on top of Super-X, destroying it, then turned back to the ocean. The explosives detonated and caused a minor eruption that shrouded the fate of Godzilla at that time.

A debate among the members of the United Nations ran for the next 15 years about the nature of Godzilla and how he should be handled. Monarch and some conservation organizations argued that the king of monsters might be the last of his species and should be classified as endangered. The majority voices in the debate argued that Godzilla presents a threat too great to human welfare to be left alone. Near the beginning of the 21st Century, Godzilla attacked all non-renewable energy plants off the coasts of the Pacific. When Godzilla approached a nuclear power plant in Tokai, the JSDF deployed new anti-kaiju weaponry on him. The new rockets heavily injure the king of monsters, but one stray shot revealed something shiny inside the nearby hillside. And from it emerged an unidentified flying object that fired upon Godzilla. Godzilla retaliated with his atomic fire breath that revealed more of its surface but a second blast sent it into the ocean. The king of monsters then retreated into the ocean. The UFO then appeared over Tokyo and launched an initial attack across the city before announcing it came to conquer the Earth. Godzilla then arrived almost as if to respond to their message and engaged the UFO. The UFO absorbed Godzilla's DNA in the attack and then a single enormous organism emerged as Godzilla destroyed the spaceship. The giant creature attempts to consume more of Godzilla's genetic material until the king of monsters finally incinerates the copycat and ends the battle. After this confrontation, governments focused on developing renewable energy to reduce or prevent future Godzilla attacks.
