Kandarian Demon
I know now that there is such a thing as a "Living Evil". A foul and shapeless thing that lives not in the spaces that we know, but between them. In the dark. In the night.
The Kandarian Demon is an ancient demonic spirit responsible for unleashing Deadite spirits and creating other supernatural occurrences in the world of the living. It is a member of the Katardi band that roams heavily wooded or jungle areas. The Kandarian Demon inhabits a large tree or similar plant during the day to avoid the sunlight. It can move limited distances during the day but freely at night as a long trail of mist. Whether the Kandarian Demon manifests physically or spiritually, it is 60 feet long.
History
The watcher in the woods existed before human beings were given dominion over the Earth, where it roamed dark, primeval forests that it ruled at the time. It grew resentful of humans as they spread and built their cities believing that they were nothing more than monkeys. When the watcher in the woods discovered that the souls of the most-wicked humans wound up in the many hells after their death it began perfecting its techniques in corrupting them. Then it grew impatient and perfected the power to bring other Deadites from the lands of the dead to Earth to steal human bodies and send unready souls to early damnation.
Antiquity
The watcher in the woods became known as Humbaba or Huwawa during the rise of Babylon and Mesopotamian civilization. Humbaba came to the city of Kandar in ancient Mesopotamia to contact the high priest Urigan. Once it began its congress with Urigan, Humbaba summoned the creature Beletseri to convince Urigan that the Deadites were avatars of the goddess Ereshkigal. At the direction of Humbaba and Beletseri and despite the starvation, thirst, and plague he had to suffer, Urigan traveled the world to assemble the lost scrolls of the Old Ones. He returned with all that he was asked for and bound them with the skin of the damned and unrepentant. Once the original Necronomicon was completed, Humbaba and Beletseri revealed their true natures to collect the book but Urigan refused. Humbaba summoned more Deadites to possess the people of Kandar, who spread their wickedness by biting and clawing other people. The massacre didn't end until everyone infected was decapitated and dismembered, but the book had found its way to Akhsa by then. This incident in Kandar was how Humbaba became known as the Kandarian Demon.
The wandering Eternal Gilgamesh and his companion, the formerly defeated Gamma Mutate Enkidu heard of an evil force moving through the cedar forests in what is today the Mediterranean coasts of Lebanon and Syria. Gilgamesh decided that they must remove this evil and collect the cedar for his own needs, but Enkidu argued against it. Enkidu's words fell on deaf ears and they traveled over seven mountain ranges until they came into the forests, where the Kandarian Demon roamed. It was still known locally as Humbaba. The forests and the animals within seemed to conspire against Gilgamesh and Enkidu, creating a cacophony of music and hallucinations all around them. Undeterred in their journey, Humbaba confronted Gilgamesh and Enkidu. The 2 heroes fought him until Humbaba summoned a storm that blinded Gilgamesh and the demon mauled Enkidu nearly to death. Gilgamesh then cried out for aid when Ikaris came and used his telekinesis to part the storm so his fellow Eternal could defeat the Kandarian Demon. Gilgamesh and Enkidu hesitated on what to do about Humbaba as they knew several Deadites had positioned themselves as Annunaki and killing it would garner their ire. They also knew the Kandarian Demon would continue to prey on humans. Gilgamesh decapitated the demon and took its bark-like hide and wood-like skeleton for use in Babylon. The murder of Humbaba made the false Deadite gods demand Enkidu's soul in recompense.
The Classical Age
A piece of wood from the slain Kandarian Demon was used to craft the haft of the Spear of Longinus, later known as the Spear of Destiny. It found its way into the hands of a Roman legionnaire, Longinus who used it to pierce Jesus of Nazareth's side to check if he was dead. Since Jesus was already dead, water and blood flowed from the wound over the spear. From that point forward the Spear of Longinus granted the commander that wielded it the ability to conquer the world, heal the wielder's wounds, and enhance their powers. The influence of the Kandarian Demon's body in the hilt meant that the spear blessed the righteous and the unrighteous.
Medieval Times
The Kandarian Demon returned to Earth when summoned to the English countryside. Lord Arthur's Wise Man convinced the chosen one, Ash Williams to retrieve the Necronomicon from the graveyard and the Kandarian Demon chased him as it had in the future. This time it entered his body and manipulated him until he shattered a mirror. It then spawned miniature doppelgangers from the shards of the broken mirror after Ash looked into them who tormented the chosen one until they could tie him down and force him to swallow one of them. That action created a full-sized doppelganger who later went on to command the army of darkness that attacked Castle Kandar in an attempt to retrieve the recovered Necronomicon and end the world.
Cold War Era
Professor Raymond Knowby unintentionally summoned the Kandarian Demon to the Tennessee hills where it wasted no time attacking his wife, Professor Henrietta Knowby. It forced her soul from her body and replaced it with a Deadite that immediately attacked her husband. After an attempt to save Henrietta's soul, Raymond buried her in the cellar which put her in a sleep-like state but the Kandarian Demon attacked him next. Raymond fought to survive this attack but was inevitably killed in a confrontation with Ash, Kelly, Pablo, and Ruby when they used the Necronomicon to come back in time to stop the Ash of 1981 from acquiring the Necronomicon. Ruby killed Raymond but this action was essential to saving the future from another Deadite invasion.
When Ash Williams, his sister, his girlfriend, and his 2 friends came to the cabin for their vacation, the newly reawakened Kandarian Demon targeted Ash's sister because she was the most psychologically vulnerable in the group. It possessed the trees in the forest behind the house to attack her before it allowed another Deadite to possess her. Then she forced the rest of Ash's friends and girlfriend out of the cabin so that it could attack them and possess them with Deadites. Ash left the cabin after destroying his friends’ possessed bodies by burning his copy of the Necronomicon when the Kandarian Demon attacked him. But the future Ash saved his younger self, and the duplicate Necronomicons, 1 Ash burned and 1 in the hands of Ruby, caused a paradox. Future Ash took his younger self back to Elk Grove, Michigan and then he returned to his time where he was hailed as a hero.
After years of being drawn back to the cabin, Ash returned with his girlfriend Linda for a romantic getaway. After Linda started the tape recorder, Ash instinctually stopped it but not fast enough to prevent the reawakening of the Kandarian Demon. As Linda was changing for bed, the demon broke through the bedroom window and attacked her, supplanted her soul with a Deadite. Ash decapitated her and buried her outside, and the Kandarian Demon attacked him and he found himself possessed by the demon itself, unable to push his soul out. When day broke, the Kandarian Demon retreated into a tree and Ash was himself again. Unfortunately, the Deadite inside of Linda wasn't disposed of properly and she rose again. She bit his hand, infecting it with a Deadite and he had to cut it off with a chainsaw. Then he used that same chainsaw to end Linda's possession. But the Kandarian Demon wasn't done with Ask, tormenting him with hallucinations and strange sounds, then possessed him again to murder newcomer Annie Knowby, the daughter of the 2 professors who owned the cabin and recorded the translations. It was finally forced out of him for the last time when Annie invoked Ash's feelings for Linda with a piece of her jewelry. Annie then recited an incantation to make the Kandarian Demon physical but failed to finish the spell that would send it back where it came from before Ash's possessed hand stabbed her. The portal sucked Ash, the Kandarian Demon, the Necronomicon, and everything around the cabin back in time and to the lands near Castle Kandar.
Superhuman Registration Era
The Kandarian Demon had remained dormant for more than 3 decades until he believed he could impress a woman he brought back to his trailer during a drunken bender and pulled out the Necronomicon. Ash read passages from the book and reawaked the demon and it immediately began to summon Deadites into this world and attack the people around him. It started with a woman he hooked up with at a bar, then his neighbor, his co-worker Kelly's father, and on and on. The Kandarian Demon continued to be an unseen enemy through Ash's tribulations at this late stage in his life, summoning Deadites to possess those around him and occasionally attacking him and his companions outright.
