Magic discipline

Manifestation

If magic families group spells according to their mechanism, disciplines group them according to their purpose. A discipline in magic is a body of knowledge and skills. Unlike magic approach, disciplines are not subject to doctrines or philosophies. Users may choose to specialize in one discipline, but most opt for versatility:
  • attack: it brings together all the spells used to wound, kill or damage. Once they are cast, they are spells with immediate effect, even if the effects are not visible immediately and are fleeting. These are spells whose triggering can be delayed. They are intended for a target, a limited number of targets or to act on a determined, precise and non-extended area.
  • defense: defense spells are intended to resist or repel attacks, magical or not. These are spells that generally do not activate before being attacked. Once cast, defense spells have an immediate and ephemeral effect. These are spells whose triggering can be delayed and whose effects can be activated by an attack or the approach of an individual with bad intentions.
  • healing: this discipline allows, as its name suggests, to heal. Healing spells treat both non-magical and magical injuries and illnesses, as well as physical and mental injuries. Healing spells have an immediate and ephemeral effect. Healing spells, like medicines, can be used as treatment.
  • protection: protection is a discipline making it possible to preserve a being or an object or to prevent a being or an object from being saved. It is a discipline aimed at creating powerful and often complex spells capable of resisting violent attacks as well as the wear and tear of time. Once cast, protection spells have an immediate and lasting, or permanent, effect. Protection spells can nevertheless disappear if they are undone or on the caster's death if the latter did not provide a supply of power for the spell other than themselves. The difference between protection spells and defense spells is that the former are much more complex to set up and require time, skills and sometimes expensive and/or rare ingredients to be able to be implemented. They also last much longer. In addition, they are not a reaction to an attack during a fight, but a way of protecting yourself against possible dangers.
  • destruction: destruction spells are extremely powerful spells intended to eradicate a large number of people in one go or an entire building. Destruction spells have immediate or delayed and ephemeral effects. Unlike attack spells and like protection spells, destruction spells require knowledge, power and skills, as well as, sometimes, rare and/or expensive ingredients.
  • countermagic: countermagic is a particular discipline. It is used to undo spells. If spells were knots, countermagic would be the study of these knots to know which thread to pull to untie them. This discipline is not providing a reverse spell, but rather undoing what has been done. Countermagic is a complex discipline that requires a lot of knowledge and skills. This discipline is used to break protective spells, blessings and curses.
  • utility: the spells of this discipline are intended to be used in everyday life or for multiple uses, related to combat or not. Once launched, their effects can be immediate or delayed, ephemeral or lasting. This varies greatly depending on the spell and its use.
  • divination: divination spells allow you to reveal what is hidden or secret, that is to say the future, the past, lost or forgotten things... There are various ways of practicing divination but, as soon as a word ends in "mancy", it is a form of divination (including necromancy).
  • blessing and cursing: these two disciplines operate on the same principle: that of applying an advantage (the blessing) or a disadvantage (the curse) to someone or something, in a lasting way. The effects can be immediate or delayed, but in all cases, they are long-lasting, but not necessarily permanent. In some cases, blessings are only given to perform a particular task and once done, the blessing is lifted. In the case of delayed triggers, the effects can only appear following a certain event or when a cursed or blessed object comes into the possession of a person. Likewise, some curses are specific and do not affect the whole person.
